Salzmünde brings together traces of a long local history and paths through the Saale Valley and Salzatal landscapes. On the western edge of the Saale Valley, remains of a castle complex can be seen on a hill spur; half-timbered houses from the early 19th century also shape the townscape. Cycling and hiking routes, a harbor on the Saale and archaeological evidence offer different perspectives on the town. When planning your trip, you can focus on history, landscapes or experiences on the water.

History of the castle, trade and half-timbered houses

In the Middle Ages, Salzmünde played an important role as a trading center on the Saale. The town was first mentioned in a document in 979. Many of the half-timbered houses that shape the townscape today date from the early 19th century. The Salzmünde archaeological site reaches further back in time: At the site, people associated with the Salzmünde culture, named after the town, performed ritual acts at the end of the fourth millennium BC. These different periods belong to the distinct histories of the town and its surroundings.

The castle complex has its own chronology: it was first mentioned in 1288 and has been abandoned since 1442. Its remains can still be seen in the terrain and lie outside the Salzatal Landscape Protection Area (LSG). The castle can therefore be viewed as a visible trace of local history, without conflating it with the half-timbered houses or the prehistoric archaeological site.

Salzatal: landscapes and geological contrasts

The Salzatal Landscape Protection Area (LSG Salzatal) covers the Salzatal between Salzmünde and Höhnstedt. Between Höhnstedt and Köllme, the valley is cut into the soft Bunter sandstone of the Mansfeld Basin. Here, steep-sided slopes alternate with gentler ones, and the valley floor varies in width. These changing landforms shape the landscape of this section of the Salzatal.

The area between Salzmünde and Friedeburg is also worth exploring on foot. It includes, among other places, the especially valuable scenic slope along the Saale between Pfützthal and Rumpin. This makes both the Salzatal and the slope along the Saale specific landscape areas to consider when planning a walk.

Routes for cycling and hiking

Salzmünde’s location between the Saale Valley and the surrounding hills and slopes makes it a starting point for longer hikes and cycling tours. The routes described offer different directions for cyclists: the Nature Park Cycle Route R 1 passes through Salzmünde and Pfützthal towards Friedeburg. The R 2.1 circular cycling route reaches Salzmünde via the Saale Cycle Route and the Nature Park Cycle Route, then continues through the Salzatal via Zappendorf and Köllme towards Dölauer Heide.

The difference lies in the designated routes: R 1 heads towards Friedeburg, while circular route R 2.1 takes in other places in the Salzatal. When planning a cycling or hiking tour, you can match these details to your preferred focus: a ride towards Friedeburg, the circular route described here, or the hiking area along the Saale.

Saale experiences from the riverbank

Salzmünde Marina is on the banks of the Saale in the Saalekreis district landscape; the harbor provides access to boating and paddling trips. In addition, Halle-Saale-Schifffahrt offers round trips on the Saale in Halle, as well as excursions from Halle via Brachwitz, Salzmünde, Wettin and Alsleben, via Bernburg to the Elbe and back. Salzmünde is therefore part of a named excursion route, while the round trips on the Saale in Halle are a different offering. Check the current timetable before planning.

Choose the right focus for your accommodation
