Discover Schönebeck (Elbe)
Accommodation in Schönebeck
In Schönebeck (Elbe), riverside scenery meets a distinctive salt history. The Elbe Cycle Route leads directly to Schönebeck from both sides of the Elbe; historic half-timbered houses and modern artworks stand along the riverbank. In the Bad Salzelmen district, the graduation tower, spa park and brine reveal other sides of the town. You can tailor your stay to suit different interests: with activities by the river, insights into salt history or time in the spa grounds.
Exploring the river
The Elbe Cycle Route leads directly to Schönebeck from both sides of the Elbe. To the east of the river, the surrounding area includes floodplains and lakes. Cycling, camping, swimming, fishing and hiking are among the possible activities there; experiences in nature are also a defining feature of this landscape. If you prefer to get around on foot, there is a route from Schönebeck/Bad Salzelmen station to Bierer Berg: it passes the graduation tower, goes through Tannenwäldchen and follows Kastanienallee. Conditions and access may change; check the latest information before setting out.
Boat trips also add to the options along the Elbe riverbank. Panorama, coffee, moonlight and day trips are offered from the Marco Polo mooring next to Salzblumenplatz. Check the dates and specific trips available before your journey.
Salt history along the riverbank and in Bad Salzelmen
The salt-storage houses on the Elbe riverbank form a 133-metre-long, inhabited half-timbered ensemble. Another landmark is the Salt Tower: the 37-metre-high tower once belonged to Schönebeck’s medieval Salt Gate. Today it houses a gallery with changing exhibitions. A balustrade 30 metres up offers views over the city rooftops in all four cardinal directions. The Salt Flower, a 16-metre-high landmark made of iron and stainless steel, also stands on the Elbe riverbank.
Several attractions come together at the Bad Salzelmen Kunsthof: the graduation tower, the brine tower, the demonstration salt-boiling house and a small exhibition in the Red House. Regular guided tours explore the history of salt, brine and the spa; check the current schedule before your trip. Schönebeck’s historic heritage also includes salt-boiling demonstrations at the Kunsthof and the Salzland Museum.
The Bad Salzelmen spa park has extensive grounds for walks in salty air and includes historic buildings. Solequell Bad Salzelmen combines a modern pool with a sauna and wellness area, as well as relaxation in natural brine. Since operating arrangements may change, it is advisable to check the latest information before visiting.
Experiences with different focuses
Bierer Berg Animal Park offers animal enclosures, an adventure playground for children, a café and an open-air stage. The facilities available may change over time. The animal park therefore adds to the choice of nature, play and culture, without every stay having to follow the same daily routine.
These different options make it easier to plan your trip around your interests.
In the wider Salzlandkreis destination
Beyond Schönebeck’s local attractions, the wider Salzlandkreis destination offers cultural and scenic places of its own. The Pömmelte Ring Sanctuary is a reconstruction of a cult site dating back more than 4,000 years. The 115-metre-wide complex includes wooden palisade rings, pits and ramparts; it can be viewed from a nine-metre-high observation platform. It is freely accessible year-round, except during certain events. Free parking and accessible toilets are also available.
The Romanesque Road has six stops in five towns in the Salzlandkreis. For cycling tours, the Three Rivers Cycle Route offers a day trip of around 36 kilometres between Ilberstedt and Hohenerxleben, following the Bode, Saale and Wipper rivers. The Bode Cycle Route runs through the Salzlandkreis for about 51 kilometres, passing through floodplains, historic towns and villages. The wider region thus offers further cycling and cultural themes to choose from, distinct from the experiences in Schönebeck.
