Egeln brings together a moated castle with distinctive layers of history and a cycle route through the Bode floodplains. At the castle, medieval building features meet a Renaissance palace; the monastery church completes the picture with a Baroque interior and sculptures from an older church. You can plan your stay around architectural history, the museum and the surrounding landscape. If cycling is your main priority, the Bode Cycle Route offers another focus: the route reaches Egeln via Egeln-Nord.

Egeln Moated Castle: From the Keep to the Renaissance Palace

The moated castle consists of an upper and a lower castle, once separated by moats. Large sections of the surrounding outer defensive wall and two round wall towers have been preserved. The museum is housed in the gatehouse and the keep of the 12th-century moated castle; the keep itself, incorporated into the complex, dates from the 13th century. Visitors can climb the 36-metre-high keep.

The collections trace the settlement history of the Egelner Mulde, the later history of Egeln, everyday life around 1930 and the medieval history of the castle. The palace adds a later architectural accent: it was built around 1550 and received two sandstone gables in the Renaissance style in 1617. These are considered rare examples because only a few Renaissance buildings of this type survived in Saxony-Anhalt after the Thirty Years’ War. During the war, the moated castle served for a time as the Swedish army’s headquarters and as the residence of Field Marshal Johann Banér.

The upper castle has an open-air stage and a creative centre. Castle festivals, markets and cultural events are regularly held at the moated castle; check the dates for your visit individually. Themed tours and night-watchman tours can be arranged. Additional tours outside regular opening hours are also available by prior arrangement. The palace has four castle-themed rooms for overnight stays. Confirm their availability before your trip.

Marienstuhl Monastery Church and Its Layers of History

The surviving Marienstuhl Monastery Church was built between 1732 and 1734. Its Baroque interior was created between 1734 and 1738 and incorporates sculptures from the Gothic predecessor church. A particularly striking detail is the 2.50-metre-high crucifix dating from 1330. The older object and the later-designed interior reveal different periods within a single church. Guided visits to the monastery church are possible by prior arrangement; arrange a time in advance.

Cycling Through the Bode Floodplains

The Bode Cycle Route runs for about 51 kilometres through the Salzland district along the Bode, linking floodplain landscapes with historic towns and villages. On the way to Egeln, the route passes through Egeln-Nord and is mostly well developed. Between Egeln and Wolmirsleben, meadows, hedges and old oaks define the tranquil floodplain landscape. The cycle route offers a different view of the area from the town’s buildings: here, the focus is on the river landscape and the transitions between towns and open countryside.

Beyond Egeln, the Salzland district also offers cycle routes along the Elbe, Saale and Bode, as well as themed routes and local trails focused on nature, culture and history. Another regional cultural attraction in the Salzland district is the Pömmelte Ring Sanctuary: this reconstruction of a cult site more than 4,000 years old consists of a 115-metre-wide complex with wooden palisade rings, pits and embankments. You can take it in from a nine-metre-high viewing platform. The Ring Sanctuary is open year-round, except during certain events; free parking and accessible toilets are available.
