Grüna combines a past shaped by textile craftsmanship and local history with hiking opportunities and the Rabensteiner Forest north of the town. A stay can therefore have different focuses: nature and outdoor activities, architectural and cultural history, or a mix of both. From historic crafts to airship travel, several themes bring Grüna’s history to life.

Forest, Trails and Views

The Rabensteiner Forest extends north of Grüna and offers numerous recreational opportunities. The 17-kilometre Baumgarten Circular Trail is a themed hike. A shortcut reduces the route to 8 kilometres. At nine stops, the route shares insights into Georg Baumgarten and Dr. Friedrich Hermann Wölfert, two 19th-century German airship pioneers, as well as the history of the region.

For a comparison of route lengths, the “Experience Grüna” European Capital of Culture Hiking Trail is another option: it is about 9 kilometres long. The 8-kilometre shortcut on the Baumgarten Circular Trail and this approximate distance are similar; the full Baumgarten loop covers 17 kilometres. In clear weather, the Maria-Josefa Tower offers views as far as the ridges of the Ore Mountains and the Monument to the Battle of the Nations in Leipzig.

Local History and Crafts

From the 18th century, hosiery and glove knitting helped make Grüna a centre of textile craftsmanship. The Church of the Cross is a prominent feature of the townscape and was inaugurated in 1894. Another historic site is the nature-cure sanatorium opened in Grüna by Bertrand Stahringer in 1893; its building is still preserved. The Folklorehof complex dates back to 1686. These places and dates highlight different aspects, from Grüna’s craft heritage to its architectural history.

Traditional woodcarving is also part of the local culture. The carving club based in Grüna preserves this tradition and shares it with the public. The Schnitzerhäusl also houses a public library, which is free to use. Check opening hours before visiting.

Exhibition and Memorials

The Baumgarten-Wölfert Memorial Exhibition provides information about airship history and presents information, pictures and videos about Grüna’s history. It is located at Grüna Town Hall, Chemnitzer Str. 109, 09224 Chemnitz/OT Grüna. Check when the exhibition is open to visitors before your visit.

A gravestone in the Chemnitz-Grüna cemetery commemorates four citizens of the former Soviet Union who were buried there. Their names are inscribed in gold lettering on polished black granite. Various ski-jumping events take place at the Gußgrund ski jump; individual dates may vary.

Grüna as a Starting Point

These highlights can help you plan your trip around your interests. In addition to rail services, Grüna is connected to Chemnitz’s public transport network and to regional bus routes. If you are planning specific journeys, check the relevant timetables.
