A church with an altar dating from around 1500, a historic spinning mill and a precisely aligned meridian column offer very different ways to explore Kleinolbersdorf-Altenhain. There are also stops that highlight natural and industrial history, as well as a recreation area with several sports facilities. When planning your trip, it is worth considering these different themes and then deciding what you would like to shape your stay.

Church: built in 1790, with an older altar retable

The church in Kleinolbersdorf was built in 1790, in just nine months. Its Romanesque wooden predecessor had previously burned down. The new building is in the early Neoclassical style and has two galleries and a pulpit altar. These features give the church a distinct architectural character.

A particularly notable feature is the carved altar retable, created around 1500 by Zwickau woodcarver Peter Breuer. It therefore dates from a considerably earlier period than the church where it is now preserved, and was rescued from the burned-down predecessor church. The organ also has a long history: originally built in 1693, it is one of the four oldest organs in Saxony. The building’s history, its rescued artwork and the organ bring together several eras.

The Hößler Spinning Mill and industrial history

The Hößler Spinning Mill is a four-storey rendered building with a striking, tall mansard roof. Parts of its facade are made of phyllite and Hilbersdorf porphyry—both locally sourced building materials. Looking at the materials adds a specific detail of regional architecture to the building’s form.

The register of listed monuments as of 5 May 2026 names only two surviving spinning mills in Chemnitz from the same period of construction. One is the spinning mill in the Chemnitz district of Kleinolbersdorf-Altenhain, in Amselgrund, dating from 1834. This comparison puts the building in its historical context, while its roof, storeys and facade materials make its individual character tangible.

Stops, sports and a spot by the forest

The Lohse-Uhlig Trail has ten stops. They provide information about the surrounding area and its history, and offer insights into natural environments and industrial history. The route thus brings together different perspectives on the area: there are points of interest for those interested in the landscape, as well as for travelers who want to learn more about how industrial history has shaped it.

In the heart of Kleinolbersdorf, the recreation area offers facilities for basketball, volleyball and floorball. A hiking shelter stands right next to it, at the entrance to the forest. The facilities cater to different interests: several ball sports are available here, while the hiking shelter sits at the edge of the forest.

Meridian column and panoramic views

Made of Saxon sandstone, the meridian column is a point of orientation with a special feature: its integrated viewing slot opens up a view precisely along the 13th meridian east. Its precise alignment makes the meridian line a tangible subject and sets the column apart from a simple marker.

On a clear day, the panorama stretches to the mountain ridges of the Ore Mountains. Keilberg and Fichtelberg can be seen on the horizon. Visibility is key: these distant views are available only when the weather is clear. Together, the column and the viewpoint appeal to two different interests—precise orientation on the one hand and the vastness of the landscape on the other.
