Kleinzschachwitz: Cycling Church, Ferry and Putjatinhaus
Accommodation in Kleinzschachwitz
In Kleinzschachwitz, an unusual church history, the cultural programme at Putjatinhaus, and the Elbe Cycle Route with the ferry to Pillnitz come together. This offers different starting points for planning a trip: architecture and history, events, or a cycling connection to Pillnitz Palace and Park. You can already take into account which of these interests you want to shape your stay when looking for accommodation.
Stephanuskirche: gymnasium, vaulted ceiling and bells
The interior of Stephanuskirche tells the story of an earlier use: the wooden barrel vault and metal bracing still indicate that the building was first used as a gymnasium. A barrel vault is a lengthwise, curved ceiling; in the church, it shapes the feel of the space together with the metal bracing. The building’s history is therefore not just a date—it can also be read in the design described here.
The three bronze bells also have a specific historical context. They were cast in 1897 by the Albert Bierling Art and Bell Foundry in Dresden. The interior and the bells offer two different perspectives on Stephanuskirche: one highlights the building’s former function, the other the history of bell-making. Stephanuskirche Dresden-Zschachwitz has also been designated a cycling church since 2017.
The Elbe Cycle Route and the ferry to Pillnitz
The Elbe Cycle Route runs close to Stephanuskirche. The Kleinzschachwitz–Pillnitz ferry, also known as the Palace Ferry, is another useful landmark when finding your way around the cycle route. It connects the Elbe Cycle Route on the left bank with Pillnitz Palace, making the palace and park easy to reach for a short visit. From the Kleinzschachwitz riverbank, the ferry also offers an impressive view of the Wasserpalais.
The crossing therefore links a cycling route with a destination on the other side of the Elbe, while also offering a view of the Wasserpalais. Another distinctive feature: the Kleinzschachwitz–Pillnitz ferry is the only car ferry within Dresden city limits. If you plan to take the ferry, check the current timetable in advance. This lets you make the ferry crossing a definite part of your day’s plans, rather than treating it simply as a local feature.
Putjatinhaus: from the first schoolhouse to a cultural centre
Putjatinhaus is Kleinzschachwitz’s sociocultural centre, housed in the former village school founded by Prince Nikolaus Abramowitsch Putjatin. The building was the first schoolhouse for the communities of Groß- and Kleinzschachwitz, Zschieren, Sporbitz and Meußlitz. It was built in 1822 to the prince’s own designs and inaugurated on 10 September 1823. Putjatinhaus has been a sociocultural centre since 1994.
The schoolhouse’s history and its present-day cultural role are thus part of the same place. The programme includes concerts, readings, exhibitions and festivals, as well as weekly classes. Events are aimed at adults and children. If you want to include a particular event in your stay, check the dates for your travel period. For families, the explicit focus on both adults and children is a useful point to consider when planning together, without implying that any particular event or date is guaranteed.
Choose accommodation based on your travel interests
When looking for accommodation in Kleinzschachwitz, it helps to first decide what you want to focus on. The Elbe Cycle Route and ferry offer a cycling connection and a trip to Pillnitz; Stephanuskirche and Putjatinhaus offer other interests, from architectural history to cultural events. If you want to combine several interests, you can take these differences into account when planning your days and search specifically for accommodation that suits your stay.
