Discover Schönfeld-Weißig
Accommodation in Schönfeld-Weißig
Discover Schönfeld-Weißig through a variety of experiences: castle history, museums showcasing everyday life in the past, and the views and trails of the Schönfelder Hochland each offer something different. This lets you alternate between culture and outdoor activities during your trip. When planning, it is worth deciding in advance whether historic rooms and collections or hiking and cycling tours will shape your stay.
Castle history and magical arts
Schönfeld Castle is a neo-Renaissance castle; its history reaches back to a fortified medieval moated castle. Visitors can explore its historic rooms on guided tours from March to November or by personal arrangement. The castle’s visible architectural style and historical origins reflect two different periods: its neo-Renaissance design defines its architectural classification, while its history reaches back to the medieval moated castle.
At Schönfeld Renaissance Castle, the Cabinet of Magical Arts offers magical experiences without a “protective distance.” Magic and illusion provide a different kind of experience from the historical tour of the rooms, which focuses on the castle’s interiors. Those wishing to include a range of cultural experiences in their trip can choose between architectural history and an experience centered on magic.
Museums showcasing everyday life in the past
In Eschdorf, the School Museum explores the history of education and preserves memories of school life in the past. The museum in the attic of St. Barbara’s Church in Eschdorf offers another glimpse into historical living environments: using historical objects, it recreates a kitchen, a washhouse, a bedroom and a living room. The rooms illustrate different aspects of domestic life and household activities.
The Small Farmers’ Museum preserves a former smallholding typical of the Schönfelder Hochland. Its furnishings have been preserved as they were used up to 1983/84. The household, work, agricultural and transport equipment offers insight into historical rural living and working culture. These provide two complementary perspectives: the preserved furnishings show the farm itself, while the different types of equipment convey how domestic life, work and agriculture were interconnected.
At Mühlgrabenweg, the mill pavilion displays parts of an original mill gear mechanism from 1817. The mechanism was partially reconstructed in 2021; the pavilion is located near Bienert Mill. The dates refer both to the mechanism’s historical origins and to a later stage in its reconstruction.
Trails and views in the Schönfelder Hochland
The Schönfelder Hochland is a plateau of about 42 square kilometers, with wide-ranging views and many hiking trails. There are different types of routes to choose from: the Schönfeld-Weißig Mountain Trail is a challenging circular hike through the highlands. Another trail starts at the viewpoint bench on Zuckerhut near Malschendorf and leads over hills and fields to Triebenberg.
Triebenberg is 383 meters high and offers views as far as Saxon Switzerland. Together with the trail that leads there, it makes for a clear hiking destination; the Schönfeld-Weißig Mountain Trail, by contrast, is described as a circular route. This distinction can help with planning your day: decide whether you prefer a circular hike or a trail with Triebenberg as its destination.
You can also experience the landscape from different perspectives by bike. One cycling tour passes through the Dresden Heath, the Schönfelder Hochland and the Dresden vineyards, over Triebenberg and through the highlands. Its described route connects several different landscapes. Trail conditions may change, so take this into account when planning.
