Scheibenberg brings together a striking volcanic mountain, visible mining history and an old market square. At the summit stand the Organ Pipes, columns of cooled lava; in town, the museum, church and street layout tell stories of craftsmanship and history. Geology, hiking trails, culture and a seasonal excursion railway offer a variety of options as you plan your trip.

A Mountain with a Geological History

Scheibenberg rises to 807.2 metres above sea level and is one of the Ore Mountains’ three basalt mountains. The Organ Pipes at the summit bear witness to Cenozoic volcanism; the site is designated a National Geotope. You can understand the geological formations even without specialist knowledge: about 21 million years ago, a lava flow filled a river valley. Because the solidified rock resisted erosion better than the surrounding material, a table mountain remained after the surrounding material was worn away—a case of relief inversion. A 28-metre-high observation tower stands on the striking mountain.

Hiking Trails and Discoveries on the Mountain

The Upper Mountain Circuit is three kilometres long, marked in yellow and passes viewpoints with views in every direction. A summit route passes the Organ Pipes and ski jump before continuing along the Basalt Nature Trail and the Ottomar Zahm Trail. The Basalt Trail adds 15 information boards about geology, flora and fauna, as well as the history of the mountain and the towns of Schlettau and Scheibenberg.

The Basalt Nature Trail starts and ends at the Bergstraße Scheibenberg hiking car park. Check the trail markers on site and whether access is still available. The Erzgebirgskreis district has a signposted hiking trail network of about 4,500 kilometres. The Erzgebirge/Krušnohoří Mining Region has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since July 2019.

The Market Square, Museum and Mining History

The square-shaped market square is surrounded by a grid of streets whose layout has been preserved to this day. The local history museum is housed in a Baroque building dating from 1743 on the market square. It displays tools and objects from local crafts and trades over the past two centuries; visits are arranged by appointment.

The history of mining also stretches far back: mining at the Maria-Magdalena mine has been documented since 1478, and silver veins were discovered in 1515. St. John’s Church brings together Late Gothic and Baroque elements. Its interior includes prayer rooms, a gallery running around the church and about 100 metres of carved wooden garlands. If you would like to visit the church outside service times, arrange a time with the parish office; advance registration may also be required for detailed visits.

Tours, Getting There and Regional Cuisine

For cyclists, a short tour runs through Schlettau Forest to Schlettau Castle. Another tourist route follows regional long-distance hiking trails from Schlettau Castle to Scheibenberg and the Organ Pipes. Starter packages for the Stoneman Miriquidi mountain biking experience are available through partners in Scheibenberg.

Scheibenberg lies halfway along the Erzgebirge Observation Railway route between Annaberg-Buchholz and Schwarzenberg. Excursion trips run seasonally; check the dates before making plans. You can reach the geotope by car via the B101 and BergstraĂźe. Bus route 415 connects Annaberg-Buchholz, Scheibenberg and Aue; check the current timetable before travelling. The BĂĽrger- und Berggasthaus serves Ore Mountain cuisine made with fresh regional produce. The menu may change, so if you are interested, check the current selection in advance.

If you would like to use Scheibenberg as a base, include the museum appointment and the observation railway timetable in your plans.
