In Erzgebirgskreis, marked hiking trails, historic town centers and Erzgebirge handicrafts cater to a range of travel interests. The Erzgebirge/Krušnohoří Mining Region has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since July 2019. Whether you prefer spending time outdoors or focusing on culture and local history, the specific destinations and routes give your trip planning its own focus.

Hiking from circular routes to long-distance trails

Erzgebirgskreis has a signposted network of hiking trails spanning around 4,500 kilometers. One clearly defined route is the Schwarzenberg Panorama Trail: this 13.8-kilometer circular hike follows the heights around Schwarzenberg and takes about four hours and five minutes. This makes it possible to include a specific route with a known distance and walking time in your daily itinerary.

The views also vary depending on the route you choose. Panorama trails around Schneeberg, Schwarzenberg and Zwönitz offer views of the historic town centers. Near Oberwiesenthal, Fichtelberg rises to 1,215 meters; it is the highest mountain in Saxony. These destinations offer different perspectives: some focus on townscapes, while others highlight the mountain’s elevation.

The wider region offers further options for longer hikes. The Erzgebirge-Vogtland Ridge Trail is 285 kilometers long; from May to October, hikes there pass through forests, flowering mountain meadows and idyllic stream valleys, opening up wide views. Also in the wider region is the approximately 130-kilometer Zschopau Valley Trail, a long-distance hiking route used for active outings and hikes from a single base. A section of the Stoneman Miriquidi runs from Auersberg to Blatenský vrch (Plattenberg): over 21 kilometers and 450 meters of elevation gain, it passes through the Kleiner Kranichsee nature reserve and continues toward Johanngeorgenstadt.

Those traveling with children can also consider the mining trails in the Erzgebirge. Numerous varied circular routes pass through rugged landscapes and mountain villages; they are suitable for hikers of all ages. The options range from a single circular hike to longer trails and themed routes.

Handicrafts, World Heritage and regional cuisine

Seiffen is considered the birthplace of Erzgebirge folk art. The Erzgebirge Open-Air Museum in Kurort Seiffen features historic buildings and workshops from the 19th and early 20th centuries. At its heart is the original, preserved Preißler turning workshop, powered by water. Across the wider Erzgebirge region, traditional craft techniques such as ring turning and wood-shaving tree carving are still passed down from generation to generation.

Neunerlei is also part of Erzgebirge tradition: restaurants in the Erzgebirge serve nine different dishes that are meant to bring good luck and blessings for the coming year. Those interested in regional food culture will find another way to connect with the area’s traditions, alongside its workshops and mining region.

Choose where to stay based on your interests

To choose where to stay, it helps to first decide what you want to focus on. Would you like to center your trip around a hike such as the Schwarzenberg Panorama Trail, are you interested in views of historic town centers, or would you like to discover handicrafts and World Heritage? The options presented differ in both subject and scale: the circular hike is 13.8 kilometers long and takes about four hours and five minutes, while the Ridge Trail is a 285-kilometer long-distance hiking route.
