Neudorf stretches along the little river Sehma and lies at an elevation of 600 to 800 metres. As one of the highest forest-strip settlements in the Ore Mountains, the village combines a distinctive settlement history with its location in the Ore Mountains. The forest surrounding Neudorf is the largest contiguous woodland in the Ore Mountains; it is crossed only by hiking trails and forest roads.

Forest and Trails Around Neudorf

Neudorf is an ideal starting point for hiking, cycling and ski tours into the Fichtelberg and nature park area. One specific hiking trail through the village is the Bimmelbahn Adventure Trail. It runs parallel to the Fichtelberg Railway and passes through Neudorf. On its route from Cranzahl to Kurort Oberwiesenthal, the railway stops at Neudorf station. This gives you a choice between exploring on foot and travelling by rail. Another named route is the circular hike “To the Roof of Saxony”: it starts and ends at a car park opposite the church in Sehmatal-Neudorf.

Church, Soup Museum and Local History

Neudorf’s village church was built in 1599. Its oldest and most valuable work of art is a Crucifixion group by Peter Breuer, dating from 1567. The Neudorf Soup Museum, Germany’s only soup museum, offers a very different attraction. The tourist information centre is also located in the museum in the Neudorf district. There you can get advice and help arranging excursions, information about leisure activities, tourist information and maps, souvenirs, and tickets for selected events. Comprehensive tourist advice is also available throughout your stay.

Hands-on Crafts

At “Zum Weihrichkarzl,” you can make your own “Weihrichkarzle” after booking in advance. You can add a fragrance of your choice to the dough. A short guided tour of the demonstration workshop also offers a brief glimpse into tin pressing. Whether the tour is offered depends on the visitor regulations in force at the time.

Seasonal Events and a Short Break

The Kirmes im Suppenland takes place in Neudorf in October. It includes, among other things, the election of a soup king or queen and a competition to determine the soup-pot-pulling champion; the exact event dates may vary. The traditional “Lichtlohmd” Christmas event takes place in the Neudorf district in December, though the exact dates may vary here too. On Advent Saturdays, the tower musicians perform in front of Neudorf Church at 6 p.m.; the programme may vary.

For a shorter outdoor activity, there is a foot-wading pool on Wiesenweg in the Neudorf district. This wellness activity can be combined with a walk. The options here range from nature tours to the church, museum and crafts, as well as seasonal events and a walk with a short restorative break.

Plan Your Stay in Neudorf

If you are looking for accommodation in Neudorf, you can decide in advance what you would like to focus on: tours into the Fichtelberg and nature park area, local history and the Soup Museum, a visit to “Zum Weihrichkarzl,” or a seasonal event. This will help you decide which experiences you would like to shape your stay. If an event determines your travel dates, check the exact dates; if you are planning a train journey, it is worth checking the timetable.
