Cunewalde: Half-timbered houses, culture and cycling routes
Accommodation in Cunewalde
Cunewalde combines distinctive church architecture with half-timbered house culture, park history and cycling experiences. The village church, faithful house models, traces of a Slavic fortification and an 18-kilometre circular route each offer something different. There are also concert and theatre events, as well as an adventure pool right on the Upper Lusatian Railway Cycle Path. You can tailor your stay to suit your interests in culture, architecture, landscapes or outdoor activities.
Church and culture
Built in 1793, the Baroque church has 2,632 seats and three galleries, and is considered Germany’s largest Protestant village church. It is a stop on the Via Sacra. Organ and other concerts are held in the church. Visits are possible seasonally; public individual guided tours are also available.
The Blaue Kugel cultural centre also hosts concerts and theatre performances. Its programme changes over time. If an event is a key part of your travel plans, check the current dates.
Half-timbered houses and industrial history
The Cunewalde half-timbered house park features faithful models of Upper Lusatian houses in the regional half-timbered style, built to a scale of 1:5. The park is open from Easter to the end of October; check this seasonal information again before your trip. The tourist information office offers guided tours of the park on request. They last about 45 minutes and are intended for groups of up to 15 people. Check the current booking conditions before making plans.
The protected three-sided farmstead is a half-timbered house built in 1816. An exhibition about the Cunewalde engine factory is housed in the farmstead.
The vintage car museum in Cunewalde displays around 70 historic vehicles built between 1910 and 1980. Check the current seasonal visiting conditions before your visit.
The tourist information office offers bookable activities at the village church, in the half-timbered house park, in Polenz Park and at the vehicle and technology museum. It also organises local tours and guided hikes, and sells hiking and cycling maps.
Parkland and local history
In Polenz Park, winding paths lead through a landscape shaped by ponds. Historic features include the remains of a Slavic fortification and a memorial stone to the writer Wilhelm von Polenz. Water, paths and memorials give the park a different character from the buildings in the village: landscape and local history come together in the same place.
Cunewalde lies within the Upper Lusatian Highlands Landscape Protection Area. This designation complements the cultural and historical attractions with a focus on the landscape that shapes the village.
Cycling and water
Cunewalde connects the Spree Cycle Route with an 18-kilometre circular tour through the valley between Czorneboh and Bieleboh. The stated distance gives you a concrete point of reference for planning your day. As route conditions can change, check them locally before setting off.
Cunewalde adventure pool is right on the Upper Lusatian Railway Cycle Path and offers charging facilities for e-bike batteries. The solar-heated pools cover 850 square metres of water surface. Facilities include a giant slide, a wide slide, a play cove, a climbing net, a play area for young children and a water playground. As facilities and charging availability may change, check their current availability before your visit.
