Radibor combines Sorbian culture with a long Catholic history and a range of ways to explore the town and its stories. Its cultural heritage is especially tangible in the Easter riding procession, the bilingual town and street signs, and the Alojs Andritzki memorial trail. Churches and castles mark other points in its history. When planning your trip, you can decide whether cultural history or a cycling tour should be the focus of your stay.

Sorbian Traditions and a Multilingual History

During the Sorbian Easter riding procession, riders on decorated horses carry the Easter message in a procession. Radibor welcomes visiting processions from Storcha and Bautzen. If this tradition is the reason for your trip, check the specific event date before booking.

German-Sorbian town and street signs are also part of the Radibor area’s landscape. They reflect the coexistence of German and Sorbian communities. The Alojs Andritzki memorial trail offers another way to explore the town’s history: alongside a starting information board, five thematic boards are located at different points in the town. The texts about Alojs Andritzki’s life are in Sorbian and German. QR codes provide additional multilingual texts and audio in Sorbian and German at the stops. This lets you explore the subject across several stops rather than at just one location.

Churches and Castles: Different Points in Time

Radibor has three Catholic churches: the Old Parish Church, the Church of the Cross, and the New Parish Church. The history of the Catholic parish dates back to the 13th century; a first chapel is mentioned around 1270. The Church of the Cross has a later, specific date: Sigmund Behr had it built in 1397. The early mention of a chapel and this construction date offer different reference points for understanding the parish’s long history.

The history of the castles also spans distinctly different periods. Radibor Castle was built between 1709 and 1719 as a Baroque castle and has a four-wing layout that is rare in Saxony. At Milkel Castle, the south tower is the oldest part; it dates from the 13th century. These dates offer architecture enthusiasts a clear contrast between a medieval structure and a Baroque castle complex.

Cycling Routes with Different Highlights

The Neschwitz–Radibor Pond Tour is an easy, 17.14-kilometer family loop. It can start and end at the Radibor sports ground. Its length, route type, and a possible starting and ending point are therefore clearly specified. Check route conditions and signage before setting out.

Other routes have their own highlights: the Sorbian Impressions Cycle Route offers a way to learn about Sorbian culture in Upper Lusatia. The approximately 88-kilometer Sea Eagle Loop passes through a biosphere reserve and partly through the northern part of the municipality of Radibor. While the Pond Tour is described as a manageable loop for families, the other options differ in their cultural or landscape focus and in their stated distance.

Plan Your Stay Around the Reason for Your Trip

When looking for accommodation in Radibor, it helps to first decide on the purpose of your stay. For the Easter riding procession, the event date is an important planning point; for a day of cycling, you can use the route type and stated length as a guide.
