Leutersdorf can be explored through two clearly distinct route options: an easy circular hiking trail measuring 3.42 kilometres and a 12.8-kilometre cycling route. The town also offers a history of the textile industry, half-timbered houses and buildings marked by distinctive historical dates. When planning your stay, you can choose your own focus from outdoor activities, local history and regional architecture.

Textile history and historic buildings

The Lautex Memories Museum documents the local textile industry tradition and brings this part of the town’s history to life. The half-timbered houses along the cycling route offer a different perspective: they represent a traditional building style. The historically significant former Niederkretscham inn is also on the route. This brings together the textile past, half-timbered architecture and a historic site along the way.

The Church of the Assumption of Mary in Leutersdorf was consecrated on 5 October 1862, following two years of construction. Oberleutersdorf Castle is considered one of the most striking late Baroque examples in eastern Saxony. Together, these buildings reveal two different sides of the town’s history: a precisely dated consecration in the 19th century and a distinctive architectural classification.

Comparing hiking and cycling

The Karasek Circular Trail is 3.42 kilometres long, rated easy and laid out as a loop. Information boards recall historic sites associated with the trail’s history. The circular route starts at the Karasekschenke Neuwalde in Leutersdorf. If travelling by bus from Zittau to the trail, use the Waldschlösschen stop on route 30. Check the timetable before setting off.

The 12.8-kilometre Half-Timbered Houses Cycling Route runs from Hainewalde via Spitzkunnersdorf and Leutersdorf to Eibau. Along the way, it passes the Lautex Memories Museum and traditional half-timbered houses. Since 2024, the route has been part of the Saxon Low Mountain Range Route.

The circular trail is a loop, while the cycling route runs from Hainewalde to Eibau. The two options therefore differ not only in length and mode of travel, but also in whether you are looking for a circular walk or a route through several towns. The information boards along the circular trail highlight historical connections, while the cycling route takes in textile history and half-timbered architecture along the way.

Wacheberg and trails through Folge

At 452 metres, Wacheberg is Leutersdorf’s highest point. In good weather, it offers wide-ranging panoramic views. The Upper Lusatian Mountain Trail passes through Folge, adding another hiking trail to the local routes. This gives you several ways to plan your activities: an easy circular walk, a longer cycling route and a named long-distance hiking trail.

In the wider destination of Görlitz

The wider destination of Görlitz offers a distinct cultural and historical focus. After a city fire, Schönhof was rebuilt in the Renaissance style from 1526 onwards. Today, it is the main building of the Silesian Museum in Görlitz and is considered one of the oldest Renaissance buildings north of the Alps. Untermarkt is the historic heart of Görlitz, surrounded by magnificent townhouses from the Renaissance and Baroque periods.

St. Peter’s Church in Görlitz also makes its own architectural statement: it is Saxony’s largest hall church and a masterpiece of Gothic architecture. Its Sun Organ was built by Eugenio Casparini towards the end of the 17th century and can imitate birdsong. As a wider destination, Görlitz therefore offers a different focus from Leutersdorf’s textile history, half-timbered houses and routes.
