Lückendorf is the only place on the sunny southern side of the Zittau Mountains, at an elevation of 450 to 550 metres. Hiking destinations such as Hochwald, Brandberg with its Felsengasse, Scharfenstein and Heideberg surround the village. The listed village church and local events offer further themes for a stay. This gives you a choice when planning your trip: nature, architectural and art history, event traditions—or a combination of these.

Hiking between local destinations and the border trail

The circular trail “Stone Zoo in the Zittau Mountains: Around Fuchskanzel” starts and ends at the car park by the forest lodge in Lückendorf. One section of the circular hiking trail follows the German-Czech border as far as the Bohemian Gate. This offers a different approach from the hiking destinations around the village: the focus here is on a specific circular route with the same start and end point and a named border section, while the other destinations provide a wider choice for planning a hike. If you would like to travel by bus, check before setting out whether route 7 from Zittau station to Lückendorf Forsthaus is running on your travel date.

Village church and gallery paintings

The listed village church is an early Baroque hall church, built in 1690 on the former trade route to Bohemia. Its galleries bear 22 scenes from the life of Jesus Christ, painted directly onto wood in grisaille using tempera colours. The paintings are attributed to the Upper Lusatian painter Nikolaus Prescher. The architecture and paintings offer different ways to explore the village’s history: the construction date and former trade route place the church in its historical context, while the gallery paintings—with their religious subject, painting technique and regional attribution—provide a distinctive art-historical perspective. Alongside the hiking destinations, the history of a single listed building thus becomes another theme for your trip.

Motorsport and festival parade

For over 100 years, the Lückendorf Hill Climb has celebrated motorsport on one of Germany’s oldest natural racing circuits. Dates and programme may vary; check both if you are planning your stay around the race. The 58th Lückendorf Heimatfest, featuring a historical festival parade, is scheduled for 2026. These offer a choice of different event experiences: motorsport tradition on the one hand, and a parade with historical connections on the other. If an event is the deciding factor for your trip, check the date in advance before making your plans around it.

Plan your stay around your own interests

When looking for accommodation in Lückendorf, it helps to first decide what you want to focus on during your trip. If you want to make hiking the main activity, the circular route by the forest lodge and the other hiking destinations provide useful reference points for your plans. If you are interested in architectural and art history, the village church and its gallery paintings take centre stage; if you are interested in motorsport or festivals, the event dates matter. For a trip shared by people with different interests, these themes can also sit side by side, giving you a reason to weigh up nature, local history and events as you plan.
