Oybin brings together striking rock formations, a high-lying monastery and castle ruin, a mountain church and wide views across the landscape. Nature and architectural history offer different highlights: you can choose to focus on walks, viewpoints and cultural sites according to your interests. When looking for accommodation, it helps to first consider whether you would rather spend more time outdoors, at historic sites or enjoying a mix of both.

Ruins, Church Architecture and the Via Sacra

Oybin Castle & Monastery is a complex of ruins above the town, once inhabited by Cölestine monks and knights. From the ruins, views extend across the surrounding mountains and valleys. The complex is also part of the Via Sacra, which connects art treasures in the tri-border region. This means the site brings together a history of changing uses and a broader cultural context.

Oybin Mountain Church is also located above the town. It is a German Peasant Baroque church and offers views over the surrounding landscape. Those interested in architectural history will find a distinct ecclesiastical feature here alongside the ruins. The views are part of the character of both sites, without making their different architectural styles one and the same.

Rock Formations and Panoramic Views

The Kelchsteine stand out for their mushroom-shaped sandstone formations. They are designated a natural monument and are used as climbing rocks; climbing conditions can vary. Another facet of the uplands takes centre stage when it comes to views across the landscape: from Hochwald, hikers can look out over the Germany–Poland–Czech Republic tri-border region. The highest observation tower in the Zittau Mountains is also located there.

There are two mountain inns on Hochwald. If you plan to visit, check availability in advance. A hike to Töpfer covers approximately five kilometres and takes about two hours. These approximate figures help you estimate the time required; trail conditions can vary.

Getting Around in Different Seasons

The Gebirgsexpress uses historic buses and trains for accessible trips to mountain summits, including Töpfer and Hochwald. Services depend on the weather and season. This is an important planning difference compared with the hike to Töpfer: here, as well as the approximate time required, it is important to bear in mind that services depend on conditions and the season.

Oybin’s winter activities include winter hiking, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. Which activities are possible depends on snow conditions and seasonal operations. The focus therefore varies by time of year: in winter, these snow activities are available in the area, while the hike to Töpfer is described by its approximate distance and duration.

A Playful Look at the Rocks

At the SteinZoo, unusually shaped rocks resembling exotic animals feature in a family-oriented adventure setting. The animal shapes give the nature experience a playful feel and offer a different highlight from the Kelchsteine, which are used as climbing rocks. For families who enjoy discovering nature together, this unusual visual language offers a specific conversation starter: Which animal does each outline bring to mind?

Görlitz: A Distinct Focus on Urban Culture

Görlitz offers a distinct urban perspective. Its Old Town has around 4,000 historic buildings and is one of the best-preserved historic ensembles in Central Europe. Untermarkt is the historic heart of the city, surrounded by magnificent townhouses from the Renaissance and Baroque periods.

The Schönhof also brings Görlitz’s architectural history to life: after a city fire, it was rebuilt in the Renaissance style from 1526 onwards. Today, it is the main building of the Silesian Museum in Görlitz and one of the oldest Renaissance buildings north of the Alps. In Görlitz, the focus is therefore on the Old Town and the Renaissance, while Oybin offers a different travel experience, centred on rock formations, mountain views and its complex of ruins.
