Quitzdorf am See
Accommodation in Quitzdorf am See
Quitzdorf am See combines an extensive waterscape with heathland, forests, moors and ponds. The Quitzdorf Reservoir has a water surface of around 7.35 square kilometres and is Saxony’s largest reservoir by area. Cycling tours and opportunities to observe nature complement the experiences on the water; the history of the former village of Quitzdorf is also part of the landscape.
Stay by the lake and explore the surrounding area
Campsites and bungalow complexes are located on the reservoir shore. You can combine a lakeside stay with activities on the water, or focus your search more on the surrounding forests, heathland and pond landscapes. Fishing and sailing are among the uses of the reservoir. The lake is therefore not just a scenic backdrop, but also a hub of activity during your stay.
Water, heathland and protected landscapes
The reservoir lies within the Quitzdorf Reservoir and Kollmer Höhen Landscape Protection Area. This protected area is part of the Upper Lusatian Heath and Pond Landscape, one of the largest contiguous pond regions in Central Europe. The reservoir itself is designated as a nature reserve. Quitzdorf am See also offers guests heathland and forests, flowing waters, moors, ponds and the Kollmer Höhen. Kollm lies in the easternmost part of the Upper Lusatian Heath and Pond Landscape. In Horscha, a wild and romantic landscape park designated as a natural monument adds to the scenery; a hornbeam-oak forest grows there.
Explore by bike or on foot
Those wishing to explore the area by bicycle will find a specific circular route: the 20-kilometre loop around the Quitzdorf Reservoir passes through the landscape protection area towards Sproitz, then continues along the Frog Cycle Path to Kollm. White-and-green markings with the number 11 indicate the route. Along the way, there are also opportunities to fish and explore the lake by canoe. Around the reservoir, you can observe otters, beavers, white-tailed eagles, kingfishers and white storks; these opportunities to observe nature provide a different kind of complement to an active day on a bike or on the water.
Another destination, Monumentberg in Groß Radisch, is close to Quitzdorf am See. There is an observation tower there, and numerous hiking trails run around the hill. This gives you a choice when planning between the cycling loop by the reservoir and hiking trails at a nearby, clearly identified destination.
Local history and discoveries in Sproitz
The former village of Quitzdorf had to make way for the construction of the reservoir. This past connects the lake’s name with local history and gives today’s waterscape an additional historical dimension.
In Sproitz, the KNAX playground is set in an idyllic park covering around 9,000 square metres. The playground includes Fetzenstein Castle and a KNAX village with a savings bank and Emmerich’s shop. It is advisable to check its current status before visiting. This makes it easy to plan the attraction as a separate stop alongside the landscape and water experiences.
