Rothenburg/O.L. between the Neisse, park and history
Accommodation in Rothenburg/Oberlausitz
Rothenburg/O.L. brings together a varied river landscape, historic buildings, museums and a large landscape park. You can explore the town through a range of themes: take a walk through meadows to the Neisse, follow a beaver nature trail or discover the town’s history and historic technology. The Oder–Neisse Cycle Route also offers an option for active days: from Rothenburg, it runs south along the Neisse to Görlitz.
Palace park, meadows and the Neisse
Rothenburg Palace Park is one of the largest landscape parks of the 19th century in Upper Lusatia–Lower Silesia. Eight of the eleven species of oak that once grew there remain; rhododendrons, hydrangeas, magnolias and tulip trees add to the collection. So the park offers more than a single view: its old oaks and varied ornamental trees lend the landscape distinct botanical accents.
Beyond Rothenburg, you can walk through meadows to the Neisse. The river runs alongside the town for nearly 20 kilometres. The beaver nature trail offers another way to explore the outdoors: this circular route, almost five kilometres long, uses information panels to explain beavers’ lives, their spread and conflicts with human needs. It was created after beavers, having disappeared from the river floodplains, settled there again. These are two distinct perspectives: the designed park landscape and questions around wildlife and living alongside it.
Museums and insights into everyday life
The Rothenburg Town Museum is housed in one of the town’s oldest buildings and brings together a local history museum and the town library. Changing themed exhibitions complement displays about historic Rothenburg crafts, the park and the palace. Under one roof, you can therefore encounter both local history and changing topics. The Wilhelmshof Farm Museum focuses on something different: set on the grounds of a three-sided farmstead, it offers insights into rural life and work from the 18th to the 20th century.
Items on display there include a hay wagon, a tractor, a ridging implement, a poppy seed mill and a historic farmhouse kitchen. The collection brings the changing nature of rural work to life through specific tools and a kitchen interior. If you are planning your stay around a particular theme, you can choose among several options: a museum and library, historic crafts or everyday life on a farm. These are distinct chapters of local and everyday history, not simply variations on the same museum visit.
Church, town hall and remembrance
The Protestant church was rebuilt after the town fire of 1798 and consecrated in 1805. Its tower was built later, between 1838 and 1840. The town hall stands in the market square; it was built around 1800 and extended in the Neoclassical style after 1850. This building history lends itself to a timeline: the church’s reconstruction followed the fire, while the later extension of the town hall marks another phase of construction.
The Tank Memorial commemorates a different chapter of history: the capture of Rothenburg by Soviet and Polish armies in April 1945. Together with the other buildings, it offers a view of the town’s different eras and themes—from reconstruction after a fire and 19th-century architecture to remembrance of the end of the war.
Explore technology and continue by bike
At the Rothenburg Aviation Technology Museum, visitors can sit in a MiG-21 and have their photo taken in the aircraft. The museum’s outdoor area also displays 20 aircraft from the second half of the 20th century. This combines a hands-on experience in an aircraft with an overview of the machines on display. When planning your day, this offers a different focus from the beaver nature trail: aviation technology here, nature and human activity there.
The cycle route offers another distinct focus. From Rothenburg, the Oder–Neisse Cycle Route can be followed south along the Neisse to Görlitz. When choosing accommodation, you can first consider what you want your stay to centre on: Rothenburg’s park, river and museum themes, or a travel itinerary that includes the southern cycling route. These destinations and themes give you specific ideas to plan around, without requiring every interest to come together in one place.
