Trebsen/Mulde lies right on the Mulde and brings together a variety of themes to help you plan your trip: riverside scenery, architectural history, cycling routes and experiences related to local rocks. The castle, churches and park give the town distinctive historical landmarks. On the water and by bike, you can see Trebsen from different perspectives, allowing you to tailor your stay to your travel group’s interests.

The Mulde, the castle park and a rocky landscape

Trebsen Castle stands on the western bank of the Mulde and is a four-winged late Gothic building. Its ground floor features distinctive cell vaults, which can also be admired in the restaurant. The English landscape park was laid out in the 18th century and has largely been preserved. The castle and park bring together striking architecture and a designed park landscape.

Trebsen’s rocky natural character is linked to its location in the Porphyland Geopark and volcanic eruptions around 290 million years ago. For a closer look at the region’s geology, visit the Geo-Erlebnis-Werkstatt at Rittergut Trebsen, where you’ll find an exhibition of local minerals and rocks. At events, parents and children can cut and polish gemstones or prisms and learn about blacksmithing techniques. The exhibition and hands-on activities offer different experiences, from viewing local rocks to practical work.

Churches and cultural history

Trebsen’s stone church dates back to a three-aisled basilica from around 1150. The Judithstein tomb slab is considered one of the oldest Romanesque tomb slabs in Saxony. A ceiling painting depicting the prophet Elijah’s ascent to heaven dates from 1701. Other historical details have been preserved in the second gallery, which features original men’s pews from 1755. The Eule organ in Trebsen town church was donated in 1926.

At the church, a sundial dating from before 1800 helps travellers on the Luther Trail find their way; it was reconstructed in 1975. In Altenhain, you’ll encounter a different architectural style: St. Johannis was built in 1787 as a Neoclassical hall church with a square western tower. Trebsen and Altenhain thus offer contrasting forms of church architecture. Jazz and blues events are also a regular part of the regional cultural scene at Rittergut Trebsen.

Cycling and paddling on the Mulde

In Trebsen, the Mulde Cycle Route passes the town church, Rittergut, Trebsen Castle and the adjoining park. For a longer ride, the 45.6-kilometre Mulde-Elbe Cycle Tour starts at Trebsen Market. It leads to the Elbe near Strehla, where it joins the Elbe Cycle Route. The first section from Trebsen is not signposted, so a map can help you find the route.

Specific launch and landing points are also available for paddlers: launch at Neichen weir and take the boats out of the water again at Trebsen Castle. This differs from the cycling routes, where the market or the Mulde Cycle Route provides your bearings. If you’re planning several activities, you can take these different starting and finishing points into account.

Getting there and finding accommodation

By public transport, take RE50 to Wurzen or RB110 to Grimma, then bus 693 to Trebsen (Mulde), Markt. Check the connection again before you travel.

When looking for accommodation in Trebsen/Mulde, consider which experiences you’d like to make the focus of your trip: the longer cycling tour starts at the market, while Neichen weir and Trebsen Castle are the launch and landing points for paddling. If you’re interested in culture and architectural history, you can include the churches, the castle or the Geo-Erlebnis-Werkstatt in your day’s plans. This lets you search for accommodation based on your planned activities without turning the different tours into a single, uniform itinerary.
