Pegau lies in the floodplain landscape of the White Elster and amid a newly created lake district in the southwest of the Leipzig region. Historic buildings, the town museum and public art give the town further character. This means a range of interests can come together during your stay: architectural and urban history, a self-guided tour of the old town, cycling routes and a visit to the swimming pool.

Church, museum and town history

Pegau’s history is linked to the medieval Benedictine monastery founded by Wiprecht II and to the town hall, built in 1560. St. Lawrence’s Church was rebuilt as a Gothic hall church by 1463; since 1556, it has housed the late Romanesque cenotaph of the monastery’s founder, Wiprecht II. Wiederau Castle is considered an important example of Baroque architecture in Saxony.

The Pegau Town Museum is one of the oldest museums in Saxony. Its permanent exhibitions are titled “From the Lives of the Old Pegau Residents” and “Mammoths – Monks – Movers and Shakers.” A visit to the museum involves climbing 136 steps; the view extends across Pegau towards the Monument to the Battle of the Nations in Leipzig.

Discover art for yourself

With 19 information panels, you can explore Pegau’s old town independently. The audio walk offers a different focus: QR codes at 19 sculptures unlock an interactive audio experience about public art. The information panels guide you on your own tour of the old town, while the audio walk makes public art the subject of the listening experience.

Since 2007, Pegau’s sculpture plein air has produced more than 50 works created by 27 artists. The development of this art project is also among the cultural topics you can discover as you explore Pegau.

Floodplain landscape, lakes and cycling routes

Cyclists can choose between two different routes: the Neuseenland Route leads from Pegau for over 100 kilometres through the Leipzig region; the Elster Cycle Route passes through Pegau on its way from Bohemia to Halle (Saale). Pegau’s municipal swimming pool offers a place to cool off and swim. Check availability before visiting.

The broader destination of Leipzig District

In the broader destination of Leipzig District, the Leipzig New Lake District comprises 22 new lakes with a total water surface area of 70 km². This adds a regional perspective to the view of Pegau’s landscape, setting the lake district within the wider context of Leipzig District. The district’s cycling network also includes two long-distance cycle routes, eleven regional main cycling tours and additional themed cycling routes.

Getting there and finding your way around
