In Niederau, nature and local history meet striking architectural and artistic landmarks. The Obere Aue Nature Trail combines information about the landscape and history; Oberau Moated Castle, St. James’s Church and the railway station each add their own distinctive features. You can shape your stay around whether you would prefer to explore a range of topics outdoors or take time to focus on a single cultural highlight.

Nature and Trails in Niederau

The Obere Aue Nature Trail starts and ends at Niederau railway station. Its 27 information panels cover forests, birds and vineyards, as well as local history. Other topics include the outdoor swimming pool, Buschmühle, the Oberau Tunnel Memorial and Oberau Moated Castle. The panels bring nature observation and cultural history together, rather than focusing on just one side of the area.

Niederau is part of a network of cycling and hiking routes in the Elbland region. Along Stage 4 of the Saxon Wine Hiking Trail, Gellerthaus, Oberau Castle and Niederau railway station are notable architectural landmarks. This offers a different perspective from the nature trail: here, built heritage comes into focus within the context of a hiking route. Routes and trail markings can change, so check the latest information before setting out on a specific trip.

Castle, Railway History and Architecture

Oberau Moated Castle is one of the oldest surviving castles of its kind in Germany. Its preserved features include the moat, volute gables and old sandstone surrounds around the windows.

The Oberau Tunnel Memorial was relocated in 1933/34 using original material from the tunnel portal and is of great historical significance for railway history. Niederau railway station remains in operation and is regarded as Germany’s oldest railway station. Together, a relocated memorial and an operational station represent different aspects of railway history.

Guided tours of the Oberau castle grounds include the park and the Weinhäusel. The two cellars are believed to be almost 500 years old. Check which tours are currently available before your visit.

St. James’s Church: History and Visual Art

St. James’s Church in Niederau was completely rebuilt in 1878 after earlier alterations. During the 1973 renovation, Werner Juza created the altarpiece: a large, cross-shaped depiction of the Last Judgement with six scenes showing the Works of Mercy. Groups visit the church to discuss the painting’s artistic and theological aspects.

Johann Gottlieb Fichte is also connected with Niederau: he spent several years here as a child before being prepared for his schooling in Meissen.

The nature trail brings together several topics relating to nature and history, while St. James’s Church offers a specific focus on a single work of art. This lets you choose between a broad mix of subjects and a closer exploration of one cultural highlight.

Meissen as the Wider Travel Destination

In the wider travel destination of Meissen, Albrechtsburg Castle and the visitor centre of the State Porcelain Manufactory offer their own cultural themes. The exhibition at the castle uses virtual presentations and interactive media stations to tell its story. At the visitor centre, you can see how Meissen porcelain is shaped and painted.
