Lommatzsch combines a distinctive urban history with discoveries in the Lommatzscher Pflege. Three towers at St. Wenceslas Church, deep cellars beneath the historic market square and an exhibition about Terence Hill’s childhood give the town a distinct cultural character. At the same time, cycling routes lead through open fields and small villages towards the Elbe. You can shape your stay around sightseeing and outdoor activities in the surrounding countryside.

Church, museum and cellars beneath the market square

The Terence Hill Museum has an exhibition about Terence Hill’s connection to Lommatzsch during his childhood. QR code stations provide an audio guide. St. Wenceslas is one of the town’s best-known sights. With its three towers, the church is one of the few of its kind in Saxony. The local history museum adds to the town’s story: it was founded in 1909 and opened to the public in 1911. Its collection is housed at Markt 14, the oldest building on the market square.

There is also plenty to discover beneath the historic market square: it contains numerous deep cellars, some of which are still in use today. Tours of the cellars can be arranged individually. A 360-degree photo tour gives an impression of the Schaubergkeller; if you want to use this digital preview to plan your visit, check its availability in advance. The cellars can therefore be part of your exploration both in person, on an individually arranged tour, and through the digital preview.

The digital historical town tour is titled “Historical Town Tour - Digital.” It offers 360-degree panoramas, historical photos, interactive maps and virtual drone flights over the countryside. These provide different digital ways to explore the town’s history: the photo tour of the Schaubergkeller and the tour with its panoramas, images and maps.

Town life and the regional landscape

The town invites visitors to the Summer Night Ball, the Harvest Festival, Lummscher Krautmarkt, the Hofweihnacht Christmas market and carnival events. Dates vary from year to year, so check event information before your trip. Alongside the church, museum and market square, these festivities offer further reasons to tailor your stay to your interests.

Lommatzsch is the centre of the Lommatzscher Pflege, known as the “Granary of Saxony” in the loess hill country of central Saxony. Fertile fields, orchards and tree-lined avenues shape the landscape and extend towards the Elbe valley. You can explore the Lommatzscher Pflege on foot or by bicycle along its many routes throughout the year. This lets you choose between focusing on local history and taking trips into the countryside.

Cycling routes through fields and small villages

The Lommatzscher Circular Route starts at the historic market square in Lommatzsch and returns to Lommatzsch. On its way to the Elbe, it passes through the characteristic landscape of the Lommatzscher Pflege, with open fields and small villages. One section follows the Elbe Cycle Route; the return journey is via the Elbe-Mulde Route. The ObstblĂĽtenweg is the shortest cycling connection from Lommatzsch to the Elbe Cycle Route at Niederlommatzsch. It is signposted throughout in both directions, with directional and distance information as well as orientation boards.

The routes described differ in their course, which can help you choose a tour: the Lommatzscher Circular Route starts at the market square and returns to Lommatzsch via sections of the Elbe Cycle Route and the Elbe-Mulde Route. The ObstblĂĽtenweg connects Lommatzsch with the Elbe Cycle Route at Niederlommatzsch and is signposted in both directions. If you would rather explore the surroundings on foot, there are also numerous paths in the Lommatzscher Pflege; hiking and cycling are possible in the region throughout the year.

In Neckanitz, the community centre is linked to a museum of rural customs. The estate in Neckanitz is considered a suitable destination or stop on cycling and hiking tours. These two points of interest add to the choice of cultural and touring themes, but are distinct from the sights around the market square in Lommatzsch.

If you are planning a trip for people with different interests, you can weigh these options and tailor your search to the activities that matter most to your group.
