Radebeul is best experienced among its vineyards: the RebkulTour trail leads through hidden vineyards and historic sites, offering sweeping views. The subject of wine here also ranges from former cultivation to tastings and guided tours. Literature, theatre and a narrow-gauge railway complete the picture.

Vineyard Landscapes and Former Uses

Along the RebkulTour trail, you’ll encounter old vineyard walls and terraces that document the area’s former winegrowing practices. The route thus combines a walk through the landscape with visible traces of how it was used. This offers a different way to explore wine than a tasting or a visit to a producer: here, the focus is on the land and its history, while those experiences centre on today’s wines and how they are made.

Winegrowing, Tastings and Guided Tours

The Saxon Winegrowing Museum at Hoflößnitz presents the history of winegrowing in Saxony and the work of Radebeul’s winemakers. Wine produced using organic methods at Hoflößnitz is served on the wine terrace. The Hoflößnitz Vinothek stocks wines, sparkling wines and spirits from Hoflößnitz, as well as wines from around 30 other Saxon winemakers; tastings are also available. The selection and business operations may change, so it’s worth checking the latest information before your visit.

Weinbergstraße brings together wineries, wine estates and restaurants offering themed tastings and vineyard tours. Schloss Wackerbarth complements these offerings with daily tours of its modern wine and sparkling wine producer. Check the current tour calendar before your visit. The premium steep-slope vineyards in Radebeul include Goldener Wagen, Wackerbarthberg and Paradies. Schloss Wackerbarth’s gardens add a distinctive touch: they preserve the Baroque symmetry of their French design.

Literature and Theatre

Karl May lived and worked in Radebeul; his Winnetou books were also written here. The Karl May Museum incorporates Villa Shatterhand and presents the author’s life and work in a permanent exhibition. The studio stage at Theater Radebeul offers a different cultural focus: its programme includes small-scale productions, children’s theatre and experimental forms.

The theatre’s location is a useful point of reference when planning a visit: there is a tram and bus stop directly in front of Theater Radebeul. The Landesbühnen Sachsen/Weintraube S-Bahn station is about 500 metres away. As public transport services may change, check the current connections for your visit.

Train Rides and Cycling

The Lößnitzgrund Railway runs 16.6 kilometres from Radebeul via Moritzburg to Radeburg. It serves eleven stations and crosses 19 bridges. You can combine a train ride with a cycling tour through the Elbland region; bicycles can be stowed in the bicycle carriage. If you plan this combination, check the current rules for taking bicycles on board.

A Closer Look at Meissen

Within the wider destination of Meißen, the Saxon Wine Trail connects Pirna, Dresden, Radebeul, Meißen and Diesbar-Seußlitz over around 90 kilometres. In Meißen, the exhibition at Albrechtsburg Castle uses virtual presentations and interactive media stations to bring the castle’s history to life. Check the latest information before your visit for details of the specific exhibition installations. At the visitor centre of the State Porcelain Manufactory Meissen, you can see how Meissen porcelain is shaped and painted.

Your preferred focus is a useful starting point when choosing where to stay.
