Frauenstein offers several very different reasons to stay: the world of organ builder Gottfried Silbermann, castle ruins dating from around 1200, and hiking trails through a varied landscape. You can plan your trip around culture, nature, or a mix of both.

Silbermann’s Work and Frauenstein’s History

The Gottfried Silbermann Museum focuses on the organ builder’s life and work, as well as his family, musical environment and the principles of organ building. On display is a faithful copy of the Silbermann organ from Etzdorf. The exhibition in the basement is devoted to the history of Frauenstein. The museum offers an accessible introduction to the name that particularly defines the town: here, Silbermann is presented not only as an organ builder, but also in the context of the musical world of his time.

Another testament to this organ-building tradition can be found in the village church in the district of Nassau. Its Gottfried Silbermann organ dates from 1746–1747 and was restored in 1998. It is considered to be very well preserved. Concert series featuring international and regional artists take place at the Gottfried Silbermann Museum, Frauenstein Town Church and Nassau Village Church. As concert programs may change, it is worth checking the respective dates before your visit.

Castle Ruins and Guided Tours

Frauenstein Castle was built around 1200 during the settlement of the area, on the orders of the Margrave of Meissen. The ruins and museum are part of the town center. The castle has seasonal opening hours: it is accessible in suitable weather from May 1 to October 31. Tickets are available at the Gottfried Silbermann Museum. Check opening arrangements before you arrive, as visits are weather-dependent.

The Friends of Frauenstein Castle association offers immersive guided tours about the lives of knights and robbers. Younger visitors can also meet the castle ghost “Vrouwin.” Which tours can take place depends on the association’s availability. The town information office can also arrange tours of the Gottfried Silbermann Museum, the ruins, the town and hiking trails.

Hiking Trails and Castle Park

The FND Schlosspark Frauenstein, covering around two hectares, offers a distinctive glimpse of the local landscape. It lies 150 meters north of Frauenstein and borders the castle wall. The protected area is situated where nutrient-poor granite porphyry meets the adjacent gneiss. A natural beech-mixed forest has developed there, with sycamore maple, ash and wych elm. Numerous hiking trails cross the park.

The Silbermann circular hiking trail Frauenstein–Nassau is listed as 15.6 kilometers long, with a stated walking time of four hours. It passes the Röthenhübel viewpoint, which offers views across the Ore Mountains. The trail is considered unsuitable for bicycles and strollers. For a different route, consider the Talsperre-Lichtenberg–Schillermühlenweg: it runs from Frauenstein via Burkersdorf to the Lichtenberg reservoir forebay, then returns along natural paths beside the Gimmlitz. Trail conditions and markings may change, so check the current route before setting out.

In the district of Nassau, the fitness trail offers a family-friendly outdoor activity. Alongside the tours for younger visitors, it provides families with a separate focus for an outing in addition to the historical and musical attractions. Frauenstein and Nassau hold state-recognized resort status; the designation was confirmed in 2022.

Plan Your Stay Around What Matters to You

If you plan to visit the castle, take its seasonal opening hours and weather-dependent access into account; for concerts, the changing programs are key. Choose accommodation for your stay based on the experiences you want to prioritize.
