Discover Sayda on several levels: museums tell the story of regional life through tangible everyday objects and technology; historic buildings make their own mark, and signposted trails offer routes of varying lengths. There are also winter activities, depending on the weather.

Museums and historic buildings

The Spittel Museum combines a distinctive collection with a historic building. It is housed in a building constructed in 1508, one of Sayda’s oldest surviving buildings. Across 17 rooms, the museum documents ways of working and living in the Ore Mountains. Visitors can view and even handle nearly 5,000 objects—an immediate way to engage with the exhibition’s themes.

Sayda’s firefighting history can also be explored through several exhibits. The Fire Brigade Museum opened in 1998 in the old fire station. Its oldest exhibit is a hand-operated fire pump from 1873, the year the fire brigade was founded. The collection also includes a motor pump from 1926, considered the fire brigade’s first motor pump.

You can also encounter the history of technology at the Adam Road Construction Machinery Museum, where a fully reconstructed steamroller from 1925 is on display. It is considered unique in Saxony; all its parts are original. Another technical landmark is the 25-metre-high water tower. Built in 1893/94, it is a technical monument. At present, it can only be viewed from the outside; check this visiting condition again before you travel.

The Late Gothic Church of Our Lady has a 62-metre-high tower and a Jeheber organ. Visits inside are possible by prior arrangement. This makes it easy to factor in the difference when planning: the water tower can currently only be viewed from outside, while a visit to the church interior can be arranged in advance.

Art, skiing and regional traditions

The Sayda Painters’ Trail brings together art and information along a route: 22 illustrated panels feature artists’ subjects and additional information. Museum Cäm3 focuses on something different. Its 800-square-metre exhibition is dedicated to skiing, technology and history; the museum also offers weather-independent biathlon activities such as sprinting and target shooting.

The former MittelmĂĽhle grain and oil mill is located in Friedebach, a district of Sayda. A demonstration of Ore Mountain linseed oil production is available by prior telephone arrangement. Call ahead to arrange a visit. Alongside the museums, this gives you a choice of hands-on collections, the history of technology, artistic subjects and a demonstration by prior arrangement.

Routes for different kinds of day

Several circular routes starting in Sayda range from about 6 to 29 kilometres. They pass through places including Mortelgrund, Kreuztanne and Seiffen, or head towards the Rauschenbach and Fláje reservoirs. Separate from these is the larger network of trails around Sayda, which includes approximately 80 kilometres of well-signposted hiking routes. Check the conditions on your chosen route before setting out.

The Kammweg 07 passes Kreuztanne, Oberes Vorwerk, the Salt Road and the settling ponds before returning to Sayda. The route connects with the family-friendly Blockline cycling route. Another option is the Sayda/Kreuztanne–Seiffen stage of the Erzgebirgstrail: it passes through the Ore Mountains/Vogtland Nature Park and offers sweeping views across hills and valleys. This lets you choose between individual circular walks and a longer stage based on the route that interests you.

In winter, Sayda has approximately 45 kilometres of groomed cross-country ski trails and a drag lift at the Mortelgrund ski slope—both dependent on the weather. Check conditions before planning an outing. You can choose between hikes of varying lengths and seasonal winter activities.
