Bad Düben between the Mulde and Düben Castle
Accommodation in Bad Düben
Bad Düben offers several ways to shape your stay: the Mulde, routes through the countryside, the spa gardens and Düben Castle. A newly built landing stage on the Mulde is near the town centre and makes it possible to arrive by water. When looking for accommodation, consider whether you would like to discover Bad Düben mainly through its waterways, outdoor activities or history.
Routes around the spa gardens and the Mulde floodplain
The accessible Kur-Stadt-Weg (spa and town trail) leads from the tourist information centre area into the spa district and to the spa gardens. There you will find a walking school, a barefoot path and terrain therapy trails. The five marked terrain therapy trails are open to everyone and have seating along the way. They pass cultural and historical sites such as the Obermühle mill and the spa gardens, as well as attractive stretches of countryside.
The Waldhofweg takes a different approach. This circular trail passes through parts of Bad Düben and heads towards Authausen along the Tiglitzer Forest. Natural paths between fields and wide-open views define the route. The suggested starting point is the car park on Leipziger Straße, near the bridge over the Mulde.
For a cycling trip, there is a family-friendly circular route into the Mulde floodplain, with a ferry crossing to Gruna. Plan your crossing around the ferry timetable. A regional cycling route connects Bad Düben and Torgau over approximately 45 kilometres, linking the Mulde Cycle Route with the Elbe Cycle Route. This gives you two different tour options: a circular route with a ferry crossing and a connection between two cycle routes.
The Billi-Bockert Adventure Tour is also designed especially for children. It is family-friendly, varied and can be divided into sections. As access conditions may change, check the current access arrangements before setting out.
Düben Castle: museum, mill and traces of history
The Dübener Heide Landscape Museum opened in 1953 in the main building of Düben Castle. It presents Bad Düben as a town of farming citizens and craftspeople; its location on the southern edge of the contiguous forest area is also a theme. The museum offers a historical perspective on the town to complement the routes through the landscape.
The “Lug ins Land” tower was built around 1206 on older stone foundations and is the oldest surviving building at Düben Castle. The tower contains a dungeon associated with a historic witch trial and the courtroom where a reconciliation hearing with Hans Kohlhase took place in 1534. The tower, dungeon and courtroom each offer a different point of connection to the castle’s history.
The Bergschiffmühle (mountain ship mill) is also part of the castle grounds. Its outdoor area is open to visitors free of charge all year round; check the current conditions before your visit. The Rote Ufer (Red Bank) reveals another trace of the town’s industrial history: the steep embankment is up to 15 metres high and was formed from deposited, leached alum earth, which was mined there from the 16th to the 19th century.
