Bannewitz combines a rare natural monument with a local history shaped by village layout, a castle, a mill and technology.

A Natural Monument with Panoramic Views

In the Bannewitz district of Golberode, the Babisnau Poplar is a hiking destination, viewpoint and protected natural monument. It is a black poplar; fewer than 200 specimens of this species grow in Saxony. The tree has been protected since 1937. In clear weather, the view extends across the Elbe Valley and the Elbe Sandstone Mountains, as well as over the surrounding heights towards Quohrener Kipse, Hermsdorfer Höhe and Wilisch. The view therefore depends closely on visibility conditions.

Village Centre and Historic Traces

Around the village square, the Slavic round village layout can be made out in the historic village centre. Nöthnitz Castle was built around 1630; Johann Joachim Winckelmann worked there from 1748 to 1754. The castle gardens are partly landscaped and partly formal. Visits to the castle are possible on certain event days; check the dates before your visit.

The Eutschütz Mill is also part of local history: it was first mentioned in 1486, and its reconstruction is recorded in 1711. The Nöthnitz brewery was founded in 1619; the manorial tavern was established at the same time. Historically, it produced Bohemian beer, beer in the Munich brewing style and spirits. After the First World War, Bannewitz became the site of an automotive project; the first Pilot 6/22 PS was developed there. Here, you can encounter different chapters of local history, from the historic village centre to automotive development.

Compare Hiking and Cycling

A municipal hiking route leads from Bannewitz via Goldene Höhe and Hänichen to Possendorf Windmill and back. The route information includes possible transport connections, suggestions for places to stop for refreshments, elevation profiles and distances; different paths can be combined. Before setting out, check the route details and compare the distance and elevation profile with your plans for the day.

The former Windbergbahn railway line offers a different kind of route: between Neucunnersdorf and Possendorf, it is now a cycling and hiking trail. You can therefore choose between a hiking route with named stops and a former railway line that can be explored on foot or by bicycle.

For getting around the area, Bannewitz is considered to have good connections to the A17; central Dresden is said to be reachable in a few minutes. Actual journey times depend on traffic. Check current connections for your trip.

In the wider destination of the Sächsische Schweiz-Osterzgebirge District

Saxon Switzerland National Park is the only national park in Saxony and Germany’s only national park with sandstone rock formations. At the Osterzgebirge Wildlife Park, you can see native animals such as fallow deer, red deer and mouflon, as well as lynxes, wildcats and raccoons, while out for a walk. Non-native species such as white-tufted marmosets, coatis, meerkats, Asian small-clawed otters and Bennett’s wallabies can also be seen there in a natural setting. The animals kept at the park may change.

Another major historical attraction in the district is the Altenberg Mining Museum. It presents the 550-year history of tin mining in Altenberg, which began around 1440 and ended in 1991 when mining operations were closed. Together with the region’s natural attractions, this broader regional context offers further ideas for deciding which experiences will shape your trip.
