Sächsische Schweiz-Osterzgebirge District: Nature, Culture and Excursions
Accommodation in Saxon Switzerland
Nature experiences meet a distinctive mining history and cultural destinations in the Sächsische Schweiz-Osterzgebirge District. Saxon Switzerland National Park is Saxony’s only national park and Germany’s only national park of rocky landscapes. Protected landscape areas also shape the region: The district currently has 16 such areas, covering a total of 97,200 hectares—about 59 percent of the district’s area.
Wildlife and Nature Trails
At the Osterzgebirge Wildlife Park, you can see native and non-native animals in a natural setting while taking a stroll. Native species include fallow deer, red deer and ibex, lynxes, wildcats and raccoons. You can also see, among others, white-tufted marmosets, coatis, meerkats, Asian small-clawed otters and Bennett’s wallabies. Individual animal populations may change.
The trails in Saxon Switzerland offer a variety of hiking experiences: as well as wide, well-maintained hiking trails, there are narrow, adventurous paths with steps, ladders, stairways and viewpoints. The Painters’ Way is strictly a hiking trail and cannot be explored by bicycle or e-bike. If you would like to include cycling in your travel plans, the Elbe Cycle Route offers an alternative: a 40-kilometre section runs through Saxon Switzerland. This allows you to plan hiking and cycling separately according to the activity, without confusing the routes. Local restrictions may change, so check the conditions before setting out on a specific tour.
Getting Around by Bus, Ferry and Train
Regionalverkehr Sächsische Schweiz-Osterzgebirge GmbH (RVSOE) operates more than 250 buses on 95 routes and runs 10 ferries at 8 ferry crossings. It also operates the Kirnitzschtal tramway in Saxon Switzerland. If you would like to include several places in your trip, check the current timetables to see which connections suit your plans. Checking the times for your chosen ferry or route will help you organise the day’s activities.
Mining History, Fortress and Regional Cuisine
The Altenberg Mining Museum presents the history of tin mining in Altenberg, which lasted around 550 years. It began around 1440; mining ended in 1991 when operations were shut down. The span from beginning to end makes Altenberg’s mining history a tangible counterpoint to the region’s nature experiences.
Modern exhibitions and interactive stations bring the history of Königstein Fortress to life on its plateau. The programme also includes guided tours, hands-on activities and cultural events. This gives you the option of adding a cultural destination to your stay, alongside hiking trails and cycling routes. Exhibitions and individual programmes may change.
Regional cuisine is another reason to consider when you travel: the Erzgebirge part of the district hosts the annual “Specialty Weeks,” celebrating the diversity of local cuisine. Check the dates when planning your trip to see when they take place during your stay.
Choosing the Right Place to Stay
When choosing accommodation, start with the experiences that matter most to you: mining history in Altenberg, Königstein Fortress, hiking or a section of the Elbe Cycle Route. Consider which destinations you actually want to visit, then compare your options with the relevant routes and timetables.
For Rathen, one timing note is particularly important: in September 2026, the Felsenbühne Rathen grounds and access path were temporarily closed due to severe storm damage; scheduled performances were cancelled until further notice. Check the current status before visiting, as this provisional situation may change.
