Nature and walks in Nordhastedt
An easy-to-walk path leads around the mill pond. Two small bridges cross the streams that flow into it, making for a varied circuit by the water. Fishing is also possible at the pond. A nearby car park serves as a starting point for longer walks through the adjacent forest. This gives you several options: a circuit around the mill pond or longer routes through the forest. Nordhastedt is connected to the surrounding area by bus and train. The nearest access to the A23 motorway is 9 km away.
Culture and history in Dithmarschen
In the Dithmarschen destination, the Dithmarschen State Museum in Meldorf spans 1,200 years of history, from the wealth of the peasant republic to everyday rural life in the 1960s. The Dithmarschen museum network brings together 19 museums run by professionals and volunteers at eleven locations. St. Andrew’s Church in Weddingstedt offers another glimpse into history; it is one of the five so-called original parishes in Dithmarschen.
Archaeology and hands-on activities also feature in Dithmarschen. The Dithmarschen Stone Age Park offers flint knapping, archery, Stone Age jewellery making, fire-making and bread-baking. Activities may vary depending on the programme. In addition to the park, the Stone Age Forest covers around 40 hectares of natural outdoor grounds, which are permanently open and free of charge. Hiking and nature experiences in Dithmarschen
There are different options for planning a hike: the first stage of the North–Baltic Sea Canal Hiking Trail runs through Dithmarschen and is just under 40 kilometres long; the full long-distance trail takes five stages to travel from Meldorf to Kiel. Near Lunden, the “Mötjensee and Sea Eagles” route is an easy, 12.79-kilometre circular trail for flatland hiking. Its length, circular route and difficulty rating give you specific points of comparison when choosing hikes.
On the Dithmarschen coast, guided mudflat walks at low tide reveal the diverse life of the Wadden Sea. They are led by knowledgeable local National Park mudflat guides. Tides and guided tour dates vary, so it’s worth checking the relevant dates in advance. In Friedrichskoog, the National Park Station is an information centre with a National Park exhibition on the south side of the harbour. From Friedrichskoog, the Wadden Sea Conservation Station looks after the National Park in southern Dithmarschen, along 30 kilometres of coastline between Meldorfer Koog and the mouth of the Elbe. Attractions in Friedrichskoog include a seal rearing station and the Wadden Sea Conservation Station.

During the Dithmarschen Cabbage Days, a varied programme of farmers’ markets, town festivals, and sports and cultural events takes place throughout Dithmarschen. Individual events and dates change, so check the latest information if you’re planning your visit around them.
At the KOHLosseum’s Krautwerkstatt, demonstrations followed by tastings are held Tuesday to Thursday at 2, 3 and 4 pm. From 1 November until Easter, only the 2 pm demonstration takes place. Since the schedule may be important when planning a specific visit, it’s a good idea to check the latest dates.
