Dithmarschen reveals many different sides: in Meldorf, discover the region’s history; in Albersdorf, explore archaeological traces and take part in hands-on activities; and on the coast, experience the Wadden Sea. There are also hiking trails, museums and events celebrating cabbage. When planning your trip, it’s worth first considering which of these discoveries you want to shape your stay.

Discover history—in museums and outdoors

The Dithmarschen State Museum in Meldorf traces 1,200 years of Dithmarschen’s history. Its exhibits span everything from the wealth of the peasant republic to rural everyday life in the 1960s. This sweep through time connects political and social history with everyday life. Dithmarschen’s museums also include 19 museums, run by professional staff and volunteers, across eleven locations. St. Andrew’s Church in Weddingstedt is also part of the region’s history: it is one of Dithmarschen’s five so-called original parishes.

The Dithmarschen Stone Age Park in Albersdorf offers a different way to explore the past. This open-air archaeological museum brings to life the way of life of hunters, fishers and gatherers 5,000 years ago. Hands-on activities include flint knapping, archery, making Stone Age jewellery, lighting fires and baking bread; the specific programme may vary. Next to the park is the Stone Age Forest: it covers around 40 hectares of natural outdoor space, is permanently open and free to visit, and contains nine original archaeological monuments. If you’re planning a visit, check the latest access information.

Wadden Sea and national park experiences

In Friedrichskoog, the National Park Station is located on the south side of the harbour. It is an information centre with a national park exhibition. Other attractions in Friedrichskoog include a seal rescue centre and the Wadden Sea Conservation Station. From Friedrichskoog, the Conservation Station looks after the Wadden Sea National Park in the southern part of Dithmarschen: its area stretches for 30 kilometres along the coast, between Meldorfer Koog and the mouth of the Elbe.

If you’d like to explore the coast more closely at low tide, consider joining a guided mudflat hike. Guides with local knowledge and expertise in the national park lead the tours; at low tide, the diverse life of the Wadden Sea becomes visible. Tides and available tour dates are important when planning. So check in advance which guided walks suit your visit.

Hiking and local events

For a single circular hike, one option is the “Mötjensee and White-Tailed Eagles” route near Lunden: it is 12.79 kilometres long, rated easy and described as a flatland hiking route. For a longer hike, there is the North Sea–Baltic Sea Hiking Trail. Its first stage runs through Dithmarschen and is just under 40 kilometres long; the long-distance trail has five stages in total and runs from Meldorf to Kiel. The routes therefore differ considerably in scope, from a circular hike to the first section of a multi-stage long-distance trail. Check the latest route description before setting out.

Cabbage also features prominently in the region’s events. During the Dithmarschen Cabbage Days, farmers’ markets, town festivals, and sporting and cultural events take place throughout Dithmarschen. At the KOHLosseum’s Krautwerkstatt, demonstrations followed by tastings are offered Tuesdays to Thursdays at 2, 3 and 4 pm. From 1 November until Easter, only the 2 pm demonstration takes place. As dates and event programmes may vary, it’s a good idea to check the latest times before your visit.

Choose the right base

The places and activities mentioned above offer different starting points for planning. If you’re travelling with family, you can decide together which activities are most interesting for your trip—such as taking part in activities at the Stone Age Park, visiting a museum or joining a guided mudflat hike. Then choose where to base your search according to which places top your own wish list.
