Discover Ahrenviölfeld
Accommodation in Ahrenviölfeld
Ahrenviölfeld reveals its special character in its moorland landscape and at a pond with a rich local history. You can focus your stay on nature and walking routes, or explore the stories surrounding Ententeich. The wider destination of Nordfriesland offers more options for excursions, cycling routes and culture.
Moorland and birdlife
Ahrenviölfeld is home to a 68-hectare remnant of moorland with extensive open water areas; it has been protected since 1966. Ahrenviölfelder Westermoor lies in the Eider-Treene-Sorge river landscape and the Arlau lowlands. As an FFH site, it is part of the European Natura 2000 network. Its wetlands provide a habitat for meadow pipits, lapwings and snipes.
Traces of the landscape’s history can also be found beneath the surface: tree stumps and trunks lie about half a metre deep in the meadows and Westermoor. They bear witness to the area’s former woodland. Peat was extracted in Ahrenviölfelder Westermoor for centuries. The signs of former woodland therefore sit alongside a long history of moorland use.
Routes through Westermoor
The Ahrenviölfelder Westermoor nature trail runs through the nature reserve. Its signs explain how the flora and fauna have changed as a result of the moor’s rewetting. The north–south cycle and walking path was renovated in 2009 and designated as a moorland nature trail. That same year, two information boards and three benches were installed as part of the trail. The nature reserve is freely accessible at all times; check the current condition of the paths before visiting.
Walking and cycling routes connect Ahrenviölfeld with Treia, Oster-Ohrstedt, Bondelum and Ahrenviöl. Rides on field and farm tracks are also possible around Ahrenviöl; cycling options there include the Ochsenweg and the North Sea Cycle Route. When planning, you can choose between routes connecting Ahrenviölfeld with the named places and routes in the wider Ahrenviöl area.
Ententeich and village history
Ententeich is a popular attraction for the village and its visitors. The water-filled pits around the memorial were once marl pits; at the end of the 1930s, they were leased as carp ponds. A memorial stands in the waters of Ententeich. During the pond’s restoration, a walking path was created around it. Here, history and a walking route come together in one specific place.
Village life also has a long cultural history: according to local history, the village evening event was established in 1982 and was held annually thereafter, with a large entertainment programme for young and old alike. The amateur theatre tradition dates back to before the war. This local history adds the communal and cultural traces of Ahrenviölfeld to the picture of its landscape.
Ahrenviöl and Nordfriesland as a wider area for excursions
The area around Ahrenviöl lies almost halfway between Husum, Schleswig and Flensburg; all three cities can be included in excursion plans. Short routes from the Ahrenviöl area lead to the North Frisian Islands and Halligen, the Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea and Eiderstedt. Nordfriesland offers mudflat walks and walks along the dikes; there are also walking opportunities in and around Ahrenviöl. This makes it possible to choose between local routes and regional walking ideas as different focuses.
Nordfriesland offers a much wider landscape: the district has 441 kilometres of coastline. The five North Frisian Islands in the Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park include Sylt, Föhr and Amrum. Ten Halligen form a distinctive landscape within the national park. The North Frisian Wadden Sea is an official nature reserve and part of the Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park.
Nordfriesland also offers a variety of cycling routes. The 27-kilometre Beltringharder Route starts in Lüttmoorsiel; the 35-kilometre Stollberg-Koog Tour starts in Reußenköge at the Amsinck-Haus. The North Sea Cycle Route runs through Nordfriesland and is part of the “North Sea Cycle Route”. The international long-distance Grenzroute cycle route provides access to Nordfriesland by bike. The Eiderstedt country tour passes through the region’s wide marshland, combining quiet routes and nature with glimpses of rural life, where cows and sheep are part of the scenery.
Mudflats, culture and regional discoveries
For nature watching, Hauke-Haien-Koog offers the chance to observe a diverse birdlife. Hallig Südfall has a largely natural landscape: the 50-hectare Hallig lies in Zone 1 of the national park. Südfall can only be visited as part of guided tours, either on foot or in a mudflat carriage. Excursion boats from Schlüttsiel travel to the Halligen of Oland, Langeneß, Gröde and Hooge, as well as to the seal banks.
Culture is also part of the region’s character: among the districts of Schleswig-Holstein, Nordfriesland has the highest concentration of museums and the largest number of listed cultural monuments. National park information centres in Nordfriesland offer exhibitions and events about the national parks and the Wadden Sea World Heritage Site. The Schlüttsiel Information Centre has a natural history exhibition and offers guided tours about the Wadden Sea and nature conservation almost every day; in suitable weather, a tour of the sea dike follows.
One of the specialities of northern Nordfriesland is Pharisäer: hot coffee with a dash of rum and a topping of whipped cream. It offers another taste of what makes the region special, alongside the mudflats, marshland and cultural attractions.
