North Frisia: Wadden Sea, Hallig islands and cycling routes
Accommodation in North Frisia
North Frisia offers plenty of ways to shape your stay around your own interests: the region has 441 kilometres of coastline, as well as islands and Hallig islands, opportunities for nature watching, exhibitions and cycling routes. When planning your trip, you can consider these themes individually—from a guided tour in the Wadden Sea to a cycling route with a named starting point.
Wadden Sea, islands and Hallig islands
The five North Frisian islands in the Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park include Sylt, Föhr and Amrum. North Frisia also includes ten Hallig islands, a distinctive landscape formation within the national park. The North Frisian Wadden Sea is an official nature reserve and is also part of the Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park. These landscapes make nature and the coast concrete themes to consider when planning your trip.
At Hauke-Haien-Koog, visitors can observe a diverse range of birdlife. Another distinctive landscape is the 50-hectare Hallig island of Südfall: it lies in Zone 1 of the national park and features a largely natural landscape. Südfall can only be visited as part of a guided tour—either on a guided walk or with the mudflat carriage operators. Plan your visit as a guided excursion.
Exhibitions and experiences in the national park
At the Schlüttsiel Information Centre, you will find a natural history exhibition and guided tours about the Wadden Sea and nature conservation almost every day. In suitable weather, a guided walk along the sea dike follows. In addition, national park information centres in North Frisia offer exhibitions and events about the national parks and the Wadden Sea World Heritage Site. If you would like to connect your trip with nature themes, you can choose between an exhibition, an event and a guided experience.
Excursion boats depart from Schlüttsiel for the Hallig islands of Oland, Langeneß, Gröde and Hooge, as well as for the seal banks. If you are planning such a trip, check the departure times before setting out. This makes it easy to coordinate the excursion with your other travel plans without confusing it with the tours at the Information Centre.
Cycling: route lengths and starting points
North Frisia offers several clearly described routes for a cycling holiday. The Beltringharder Route is 27 kilometres long and starts in Lüttmoorsiel. The 35-kilometre Stollberg-Koog Tour starts in Reußenköge at the Amsinck-Haus. Their lengths and named starting points give you two practical points of comparison when considering how far you want to cycle.
The North Sea Cycle Route also passes through North Frisia and is part of the “North Sea Cycle Route”. The international long-distance cycling route, the Grenzroute, provides a way to reach North Frisia by bike. The “Eiderstedter Landpartie” cycling tour offers a different perspective on the region: it passes through the wide marshland and combines quiet roads and nature with glimpses of rural life, including cows and sheep. The route you choose depends on which route name, starting point or landscape appeals to your plans.
Culture and regional specialities
There is also a cultural highlight beyond the coast and cycling routes: among Schleswig-Holstein’s districts, North Frisia has the highest concentration of museums and the largest number of listed cultural monuments. Pharisäer is a classic speciality of northern North Frisia: hot coffee with a shot of rum and a topping of whipped cream. Together with the exhibitions and events at national park information centres, it complements the nature themes with culture and regional cuisine.
Schleswig-Holstein as the wider setting
North Frisia is part of the wider travel destination of Schleswig-Holstein. Located between the North Sea and the Baltic Sea, Schleswig-Holstein has coastlines with sandy beaches, green beaches, shingle beaches, cliffs and the Wadden Sea. Across the state, the Wadden Sea in Schleswig-Holstein is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site and is one of the world’s largest ecosystems. The Wadden Sea on the North Sea coast is described as Europe’s last large-scale wilderness area and is globally important as a stopover for migratory birds.
Choose a suitable base
Next, take the places and route starting points mentioned above into account when choosing a base. This way, you can guide your search by the travel ideas you actually want to pursue, rather than choosing solely on the basis of the general coastal setting.
