Munkmarsch lies between marshland and the Wadden Sea, above the steep coast. The small harbor of Munkmarsch is at the northern end of the FFH area. Around the village, there are many opportunities for walks through the coastal and tidal landscape. Water, marshland and coast thus shape the character of this destination.

Coastal Landscape and Sweeping Views

On Sylt’s east side, Munkmarsch has a small stretch of fine sandy beach. The eastern beach lies in a sheltered bay and offers sweeping views, including of Rantum Harbor. Another viewpoint is the White Cliff at Braderup: the kaolin sand cliff lies between Munkmarsch and Braderup and is also a starting point for walks. Those who enjoy spending time outdoors will find paths through the coastal and tidal landscape around the village.

From Ferry Harbor to Marina

Until the Hindenburg Dam opened in 1927, Munkmarsch Harbor served as a gateway to the island for travelers from the mainland. Today, it is a private marina and a popular destination for recreational sailors. The historic ferry house is a reminder of the harbor’s former heyday as a ferry port. A mill can also still be seen in Munkmarsch. Several hiking and cycling trails near the harbor lead through Sylt’s landscape.

The harbor brings together different aspects of the village: its former role in travel from the mainland, its current use as a private marina, and visible traces of the past. The paths in the surrounding area are also useful for finding your way around. They offer a different focus from the history of the ferry harbor.

Sailing and Water Sports

Sailing is also part of Munkmarsch’s appeal. A youth sailing group meets at the Sylt Sailing Club in Munkmarsch. The club has acquired Optimist dinghies, sailing dinghies and a Hobie Cat 16 for the young sailors; the equipment may change. Calle’s Beach, home to the island’s oldest water sports center, is right next to Munkmarsch Harbor. In Munkmarsch Bay, Calle Schmidt offers catamaran and dinghy surfing and sailing courses. Course offerings may change.

Walking Paths, Bridge and Tidal-Flood Route

The Lügenbrücke (Liar’s Bridge) is a small bridge between Munkmarsch and Keitum. It can only be reached on foot from either village and keeps your feet dry during floods. Its name comes from a story about its unstable predecessor: it was said to collapse if children lied while crossing it. The story gives the bridge a place in local lore beyond its practical function.

The tidal-flood route between Munkmarsch and Keitum offers a specific point of reference for planning an outing. The jogging route is 7.56 kilometers long, flat and of moderate difficulty. Conditions on the route can change with the weather.

When looking for accommodation in Munkmarsch, you can first consider whether walks through the coastal and tidal landscape, sailing or traces of history are the main focus of your trip. These different interests can help you decide what you would like to discover at your destination.
