Sylt-Ost invites you to discover coastal landscapes, geological history and traces of the past through a variety of trails and nature experiences. At Morsum Cliff, a largely unspoiled stretch of coast meets exposed geological strata. Trails along the Wadden Sea, cycling tours and guided nature experiences offer further highlights. When looking for accommodation, it is therefore worth first considering which experiences you want to shape your stay.

Morsum Cliff: Coastal Features and Geological History

Morsum Cliff is one of the oldest nature reserves in Schleswig-Holstein. Its exposed geological strata represent an unusually long geological period for the state: ten million years. This makes the cliff interesting not only as a coastal landscape, but also as a place where an exceptionally long period of Earth’s history can be read in the strata.

The nature reserve’s network of trails allows visitors to experience a largely unspoiled stretch of coast. It includes the cliff, a natural beach, beach ridges, salt marshes and towering dunes. The different coastal features make the landscape’s variety part of the experience, rather than offering just a single viewpoint.

Walking and Cycling Routes

The Wadden Sea trail between Munkmarsch and Keitum starts at Munkmarsch harbour and runs above the water along the Wadden Sea. Along the way are a small bridge, woodland and thatched-roof houses; the trail continues to the end of Keitum. Guided Wadden Sea walks related to the UNESCO World Heritage Site Wadden Sea, as well as professionally guided birdwatching tours, are also offered in Keitum. If you plan to join one of these tours, check dates and availability in advance.

For a longer bike ride, the “Tour through the Green East of Sylt” offers a clearly defined route: it is 32.48 kilometres long, follows a circular route and is rated as having a moderate difficulty level and a moderate fitness requirement. The tour is designed for e-bikes and follows the dyke line through the traditional Frisian villages of Morsum and Keitum. You can visit Morsum Cliff Nature Reserve along the way. As route details may change, check the route description before planning your trip.

In Archsum, extensive cycling tours pass through salt marshes and along the dyke. This offers another cycling highlight in eastern Sylt, alongside the longer circular route. If you prefer to walk, you can consider the Wadden Sea trail between Munkmarsch and Keitum as a separate option; a bike ride and a trail along the Wadden Sea offer different ways to spend the day.

A trail also continues alongside Tinnum Castle: a wooden boardwalk passes the green rampart and leads to a gravel path that goes to the beach and Westerland. The routes described have different focuses—from the Wadden Sea trail and the cycling tour to this boardwalk and the gravel path beyond it. When planning, you can first decide what kind of route you would like to experience.

History and Traces in the Villages

Munkmarsch harbour tells the story of a time when travelling to Sylt was different than it is today: before the railway embankment opened in 1927, tourists arriving on Sylt came via the harbour. From there, they continued to the seaside resorts by horse-drawn carriage or, later, by island railway. This makes the harbour a starting point for exploring the history of travel on the island.

Remains of megalithic tombs can be seen in the southern meadows of Archsum. Information boards explain the archaeological background of these ancient burial sites. Those interested in the island’s past can also find a tangible way to explore it with “Expedition Uthlande: Eastern Sylt – In the Footsteps of the Past”: the route has fourteen stops, or “moments,” focusing on Sylt’s past and its origins.

The name Sylt-Ost also has historical administrative significance. The former area comprised five villages: Archsum, Keitum, Morsum, Munkmarsch and Tinnum. In 2009, it merged with Westerland and Rantum to form the municipality of Sylt.

Use Experiences to Guide Your Accommodation Search

A longer cycling tour, a trail along the Wadden Sea, archaeological traces or guided nature observation all appeal to different interests. Consider which of these matter most to your stay, then see which accommodation location suits your plans. This way, your search starts not with a general idea, but with the experiences you want to discover in Sylt-Ost.
