Ramstedt has a varied landscape: from the Treene lowlands and marsh meadows through marshy surroundings to the wooded, sandy Geest uplands, lined with hedgerows, in the Sein area. There are numerous viewpoints there. Lowlands, marsh and Geest give the landscape different contours—a charming setting for a trip that brings nature and historic places together.

Between the Treene and the Geest

The landscape in Ramstedt cannot be reduced to a single impression. At one end are the Treene lowlands and marsh meadows; at the other are the higher Geest uplands, with woodland, sandy soil and hedgerows. Marshy surroundings lie between them. The Sein area also has numerous viewpoints. Those who enjoy comparing landscapes will find a variety of geographical impressions within the described local scenery.

Historic places in Ramstedt

Ramstedt’s historic sites include Oldörp, a megalithic tomb and the remains of a bunker from the Second World War. These sites offer panoramic views across the Treene valley and the neighboring villages. Historic traces and views of the surrounding landscape thus sit side by side—two aspects that shape a visit to these places.

GroĂź Mittelburg lies south of Ramstedt. It is a thatched Haubarg farmhouse, listed as a historic monument, at the site of a former Treene ferry crossing. The present building dates to around 1800 and is recognized for its local historical significance and contribution to the cultural landscape. The Haubarg, its thatched roof and the former ferry crossing give this place its own historic character.

North Frisia: Coast, Nature and Culture

Looking at the wider travel destination of North Frisia, the picture expands: the region has 441 kilometers of coastline. Sylt, Föhr and Amrum are among the five North Frisian islands in the Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park. North Frisia also includes ten Halligen, a distinctive landscape formation in the national park. The North Frisian Wadden Sea is an official nature reserve and is also part of the Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park.

Nature observation and information are also among the things to do in North Frisia. Visitors can observe a rich variety of birdlife at Hauke-Haien-Koog, for example. The SchlĂĽttsiel Information Centre offers a natural history exhibition as well as guided tours of the Wadden Sea and nature conservation almost every day; in suitable weather, a guided walk along the sea dike follows. National park information centers in North Frisia round out the offerings with exhibitions and events about the national parks and the Wadden Sea World Heritage Site.

The 50-hectare Hallig Südfall lies in Zone 1 of the Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park and has a largely natural landscape. Südfall can only be visited as part of a guided tour: on guided walks or with the Wadden Sea carriage drivers. Excursion boats also depart from Schlüttsiel for the Halligen of Oland, Langeneß, Gröde and Hooge, as well as for the seal banks.

Cycle routes and regional discoveries

Two routes offer a clear guide to distance when choosing a cycling route: the Beltringharder Route is 27 kilometers long and starts in Lüttmoorsiel. The Stollberg-Koog Tour covers 35 kilometers and starts in Reußenköge at the Amsinck House. The North Sea Cycle Route runs through North Frisia and is part of the “North Sea Cycle Route”; North Frisia can also be reached by bicycle via the international long-distance Grenzroute. The “Eiderstedter Landpartie” cycling tour passes through North Frisia’s broad marshland, combining quiet roads and nature with glimpses of rural life among cows and sheep.

Culture and regional cuisine are also part of North Frisia’s character: among Schleswig-Holstein’s districts, North Frisia has the highest concentration of museums and the largest number of listed cultural monuments. A classic specialty of northern North Frisia is Pharisäer—a hot coffee with a shot of rum and a dollop of whipped cream.
