Großenbrode between the South Beach and nature experiences
Accommodation in Großenbrode
Großenbrode is surrounded by water on three sides. The South Beach, the nature discovery trail and the cycling routes offer different perspectives on the town: time by the water, discoveries in the forest and rides by bike. When choosing your accommodation, it’s therefore worth first considering what you want your holiday to focus on. That way, you can balance beach time, activity and nature according to your plans.
Beach time and play at the South Beach
A 1.5-kilometre promenade and a pier define the South Beach. The water is shallow, and sandbanks are suitable for small children. The beach area includes the KinderInsel, a play landscape next to the pier, and an adventure playground towards the mole. There are beach volleyball and beach soccer courts at the pier; the Aktiv-Point provides free outdoor sports equipment. Play and leisure facilities may change, so check their current status locally before your trip.
Water and activity
Großenbrode has six marinas with around 1,000 berths; capacity may change. Water sports on offer include SUP, kitesurfing and surfing. Board hire and taster courses round out the offering; availability may vary by season.
Forest trails and cycling tours
The three-kilometre nature discovery trail leads through the forest and features around 30 discovery stations, including the “Path of the Senses” sensory trail. This makes it considerably shorter than the suggested local cycling tours, which range from 24 to 35 kilometres. The Baltic Sea Cycle Route passes through Großenbrode on its way to Fehmarn and back; local tours lead to Heiligenhafen, Sütel, Gut Görtz and Meeschendorf. Route suggestions may be revised; check the latest information before setting off.
Enjoying the promenade
Along the beach promenade, you’ll find fish sandwiches, crêpes, ice cream, cake and restaurant meals. Many restaurants feature Baltic Sea fish on their menus. Menus and offerings may change seasonally. The selection means there’s something for every break, from a snack to a restaurant meal.
Getting here and finding your way
By car, take the A1 to Heiligenhafen and then the B207. Roadworks may temporarily alter the route. The tourist information offices in Großenbrode provide free brochures as well as cycling and hiking maps. You can use these to find your way and plan your tours.
Culture in the wider destination of Ostholstein
The wider destination of Ostholstein offers further, independent cultural attractions. In Eutin, the Eutin Festival presents a range of opera and operetta performances as open-air events every summer. The Ostholstein Museum in Eutin features changing exhibitions and a permanent exhibition about Eutin during its heyday around 1800. Cismar Monastery in the municipality of Grömitz hosts changing exhibitions and concerts in the vaulted hall during the winter season. The Oldenburg Wall Museum in Oldenburg in Holstein uses archaeological finds and reconstructions to illustrate the archaeologically and historically reconstructable history of the Oldenburg ring fortification and the Slavs in Ostholstein. Summer stage performances and winter concerts bring different seasonal highlights to the wider destination of Ostholstein.
