Süsel combines a landscape shaped by water with an established theatre tradition. Between the lakes, bathing spots and performances by the amateur group De fidelen Süseler, there are a variety of options for your stay.

Water, Landscape and Bathing Spots in Süsel

Süsel is part of the Holstein Switzerland Nature Park, whose landscape is characterised by hills, picturesque lakes and flowing waters. Süseler See and the quarry lake are popular fishing spots; there are also five bathing spots in the villages of Süsel and Middelburg. This caters to different interests in the water: fishing is the main activity at the two lakes, while the bathing spots offer opportunities to swim. Conditions at individual bathing spots may vary, so check the situation at your chosen location before visiting.

Theatre at the Kulturscheune

The Kulturscheune is the setting for a well-established local theatre tradition. The amateur theatre group De fidelen Süseler performs Low German plays or comedies every year, as well as a Christmas fairy tale. Recurring performances and a seasonal fairy tale give the tradition a rhythm throughout the year. If seeing a performance is important to your trip, check the current programme, as the annual productions may change.

Getting to Süsel and Water Skiing

To reach Süsel by car, take the A1 from Hamburg towards Oldenburg and exit at Eutin near Haffkrug. Check current traffic conditions before setting off.

The wider Ostholstein destination also has a water-ski cableway in Süsel, where beginner courses are offered daily. Opening and course times may change, so check the latest times in advance if you plan to take part.

Culture in the Wider Ostholstein Destination

The wider Ostholstein destination offers further cultural attractions. Every summer, the Eutin Festival presents a range of opera and operetta performances as open-air events. The Ostholstein Museum in Eutin hosts changing exhibitions as well as a permanent exhibition about Eutin during its heyday around 1800. Exhibitions at Cismar Monastery in the municipality of Grömitz change, and concerts are held in the vaulted hall during the winter half-year.

These examples vary by season and format: summer open-air performances sit alongside exhibitions and winter concerts in Cismar. If a specific cultural event is a deciding factor for your trip, check the relevant dates.

Nature and Activities in the Wider Ostholstein Destination

The Eutin Lake Circular Route runs along the shore of the Great Eutin Lake in some places and along natural forest paths in others. Along the way, there are views of Eutin, Eutin Castle and its gardens. Hiking, cycling, wildlife watching and exploring nature are all possible at Bungsberg. In Wallnau on Fehmarn, a one-kilometre nature trail leads through the waterbird reserve and nature conservation area.

The observation platform on the Bungsberg telecommunications tower is another specific landmark: it is 42 metres above the mast. If you want to include it in your plans, check access arrangements in advance. The Natureum Steinwarder nature experience park in Heiligenhafen lets children and adults experience nature with all their senses. At the Fehmarn Marine Centre, more than 1,000 marine animals can be seen in over 40 display aquariums containing a total of 700,000 litres of seawater.

Coast in the Wider Ostholstein Destination

An almost seven-kilometre stretch of fine sandy beach connects Haffkrug and Scharbeutz. In Haffkrug, the Fishing Experience Trail along the promenade uses information boards and interactive features to explain the history of fishing and the fish species of the Baltic Sea. This means that coastal scenery, nature watching and cultural attractions are all available as distinct interests to consider when planning a trip to the wider Ostholstein destination.
