Uetersen: Rosarium, Monastery and Cultural History
Accommodation in Uetersen
Uetersen’s Rosarium is a distinctive feature of garden culture: it is northern Germany’s largest rose garden and a center of German rose cultivation. Historic buildings, museums, a landscape area and a seasonal outdoor swimming pool offer further ideas for planning your trip. You can tailor your stay to the rose blossoms, architecture, exhibitions or time outdoors.
Rosarium and Rose Culture
Around 30,000 roses bloom at the Uetersen Rosarium in June. If you want to experience the roses in bloom, plan your visit for June. A stroll through the park is also part of the experience; seating areas and play facilities round out your visit. If you are traveling with children, you can make the play facilities a separate item on your itinerary, while the seating offers an opportunity to take a break.
Historic Buildings and Art
The historic buildings of the Noble Convent are set in park- and garden-like grounds that are ideal for a stroll at any time of year. Another notable architectural landmark is the Prioress’s House: regarded as Uetersen’s oldest house, it was built in 1664 and is a protected building. The monastery church also tells the story of the city’s architectural history. It was built in 1748/1749 in the late Baroque style; its ceiling fresco is by Giovanni Battista Innocenzo Colombo. The church at the monastery also preserves a 17th-century relief of the Last Supper on the altar.
Langes Tannen: Landscape and Exhibitions
Langes Tannen covers 26 hectares of woodland, meadows, fields, parkland and ponds. The grounds are intended as a public recreational area, bringing together a variety of landscape features in one place. The Langes Tannen Museum comprises three buildings: an early 19th-century Neoclassical manor house, a barn dating from 1762 that was rebuilt after an arson attack, and a mill stump dating from 1796. The manor house displays reconstructed bourgeois domestic culture in northern Germany, with a focus on the 19th and 20th centuries. The rebuilt museum barn contains an exhibition space for art and culture.
The Uetersen Museum of City and Local History is housed in a former municipal utilities workshop building that is 150 years old. The Uetersen Local History Museum presents local history through themes such as shipping, whaling, crafts and rose cultivation. These themes each offer a different focus: domestic culture and art take center stage here, while the city and local history themes are the focus there.
Swimming and Activities
Oberglinde Natural Outdoor Pool offers a nature-oriented swimming experience; water quality is checked regularly. Step-free access includes the sunbathing lawn and beach. Activities include beach volleyball, basketball and table tennis. Facilities include free parking, showers, toilets, changing rooms and lockers. The natural outdoor pool operates seasonally; as access conditions and facilities may change, check them before setting out.
Another way to bring nature, history and garden art together thematically is the “Geology and Gardens” tour. It starts at Uetersen Town Hall and includes the Rosarium and Langes Tannen Park, among other stops. This puts the gardens in focus both as destinations in their own right and as themes within a combined tour.
