Barsbek: Village Green, Crocuses and Timber Storehouses
Accommodation in Barsbek
Barsbek brings together a village green lined with old lime trees, spring crocuses, timber storehouses and the Barsbek Lake and Surroundings Nature Reserve. The village’s distinctive features give a stay several different highlights: seasonal village life, visible architectural heritage and nature that can be explored by bike.
Village Green, Crocus Bloom and Grain Days
More than 60 old lime trees line the Barsbek village green. In spring, thousands of multicoloured crocuses bloom there, attracting visitors from near and far. The exact timing of the bloom varies from year to year. If the crocuses are your main reason for visiting, do not plan your trip around a fixed date.
The annual Crocus Coffee event features homemade cake and handmade goods from the local crochet club. Dates and arrangements may change; check the latest event information before planning your visit around it. Another seasonal occasion is the Probstei Grain Days: during the event, Barsbek displays new straw figures every year next to the municipal car park on the B 502.
The crocus bloom and straw figures mark different occasions throughout the year. If you want to plan for both, take the variable flowering period and the event dates into account separately.
Timber Storehouses and Street Views
Barsbek has three timber storehouses, considered cultural heritage from Slavic times. The timber storehouses belonging to the Sinjen and Wiese families can be seen from the road and stand on private property. Viewing them from the road is therefore the appropriate way to appreciate these distinctive buildings.
Barsbek Lake and Cycling Routes
You can reach the Barsbek Lake and Surroundings Nature Reserve by bike from Barsbek or from the Baltic Sea Coast Cycle Route on the dyke. The lake covers around 40 hectares within the 146-hectare reserve. It is a hunting ground for a pair of white-tailed eagles; their nest is located between Krokau and Fiefbergen. This makes the waterside a way to explore a specific aspect of nature, without assuming that you will spot the eagles.
The Probstei also offers space for cycling and hiking: miles of paved, well-signposted routes lead through fields, villages and nature reserves, and past historic monuments and picturesque lakes. A longer exploration offers different landscape impressions from a stay centred around the Barsbek village green.
There is a free charging station for e-bikes with four charging points at the municipal car park on the B 502. It has been in operation since 2019; check that it is currently working before setting off.
The Coast and the Wider Plön Area
A short route to the Baltic Sea runs through picturesque salt marshes and over an old dyke to a bathing beach. The wider destination of Plön includes around 80 lakes in the district of Plön, including Lake Großer Plöner See, covering 29 km², and Lake Selenter See, covering 22 km². The district lies between the Baltic Sea and Holstein Switzerland and has around 50 kilometres of Baltic coastline. In addition to swimming, activities there include sailing, surfing, diving, boat trips, offshore sailing excursions, cutter trips and surf fishing.
If you are planning more coastal and water activities, you can consider the wider Plön area as your travel horizon.
