Großharrie has several distinct facets: the historic village green tells the story of the village’s long history; the Church of the Holy Spirit in Bokhorst is a cultural venue for Großharrie residents, and the Vicelin Trail runs through the village. History, events and cycling therefore stand as separate interests alongside one another.

A village green with traces of the past

The Ostertor was the first and, for a long time, the only entrance to the historic village green. The green is home to the Peace Oak, which dates from 1872, and the twin oak, which commemorates the unification of Schleswig-Holstein. Großharrie has existed for more than 850 years. The trees represent different historical reference points: a specific year and an event commemorated by the twin oak.

Culture in Bokhorst

The Church of the Holy Spirit in Bokhorst serves the residents of Großharrie. It hosts concerts, readings, church cinema events, book presentations and village festivals. The programme ranges from music and literature to film and community celebrations. If you would like to include a particular event in your trip, check the event dates for your visit.

Dosenmoor: formation, habitat and trails

The Dosenmoor is a nature destination in its own right. It is a raised bog with peat deposits up to eight metres thick and formed after the last Ice Age. It was designated a nature reserve in the early 1980s. Wild boar and greylag geese find a habitat there. Its formation after the Ice Age and its later protected status offer two different perspectives on the area’s timeline.

The routes can also be clearly distinguished: one circular route runs around the Dosenmoor, while a single trail crosses it. For route planning, this means either a loop around the natural area or a crossing through it. Each describes a different route.

Cycle routes and project status

The Vicelin Trail passes through Großharrie on its circular route when the route returns to Neumünster. A planned cycle path along Tasdorfer Weg between Tasdorf and Großharrie is a separate project. An announcement dated 24 April 2026 gave its approximate length as two kilometres. Construction was scheduled to begin in the second half of 2026, with completion planned for mid-2027. If this connection is important for your tour, check the current project status.

In the wider Plön travel destination

The district of Plön, part of the wider Plön travel destination, lies between the Baltic Sea and the Holstein Switzerland region and has about 50 kilometres of Baltic coastline. The district includes around 80 lakes, including Lake Großer Plöner See, covering 29 square kilometres, and Lake Selenter See, covering 22 square kilometres. The Baltic coast offers opportunities for swimming, sailing, surfing, diving, boat trips, offshore sailing, cutter trips and surf fishing. Sailboats and excursion boats also travel on the lakes; the Schwentine waterway can be explored by canoe in the district of Plön.

There are different points of interest on land, too: the district’s gently rolling landscape is suited to cycling and hiking, and dedicated Nordic walking trails add to the options. A cultural landmark, Plön Castle, stands above the lake of the same name in Holstein Switzerland; it is the emblem of the district of Plön. These coastal, water, landscape and cultural themes are part of the wider Plön travel destination.

If your main interests are the coastal, lake or cultural attractions of the wider Plön travel destination, set the regional focus of your search accordingly.
