Discover Belau: Lakes, Trails and Culture
Accommodation in Belau
Belau: lakes, trails and culture
Belau offers a distinctive combination of lakes, trails and culture. The village is linked to Lake Belau and Lake Schierensee; its hilly terminal moraine landscape includes small mixed forests and avenues of trees. Abundant wildlife and birdlife are also part of the landscape.
On the water at Lake Belau
Water sports are available on Lake Belau. Fishing is also permitted with the appropriate fishing licence; check the current local requirements before your trip. There is a public bathing area on the eastern shore. The campsite on the northwestern shore has its own access to the water and offers boat hire; horse riders are also welcome there. This gives you several different reasons to spend time by the lake: swimming, water sports, fishing and boat hire appeal to a range of interests. If boat hire or bathing facilities are part of your plans, check their current availability or facilities before your visit.
Hiking and cycling routes
Belau has an extensive network of hiking trails. The Vierer Weg is a hiking route between Belau and Ruhwinkel. For cycling, Belau is part of the 39 km-long Land cycling route. The two options offer different ways to plan your trip: the Vierer Weg is described as a link between two places, while the cycling route has a specified length. You can decide whether to plan around the hiking network and a route between Belau and Ruhwinkel, or the 39 km cycling tour.
Cultural monuments and local treats
Belau’s listed cultural monuments include the castle and the Perdoeler gatehouse, along with its associated stable and barn buildings. The Kattholz oak is considered to be around 450 years old. The architectural ensemble and the tree offer different points of interest for visitors who are curious about local culture as well as the lake. If you are planning a visit, check in advance what is currently possible, as access or presentation may change.
The café-bistro in the former cowshed serves homemade cakes, gateaux and speciality coffees, as well as a small menu of seasonal dishes. As the food on offer may change, check the current menu before visiting. Its seasonal focus sets it apart from a menu that stays the same throughout the year.
Belau in the wider Plön destination
The Plön district, within the wider Plön destination, lies between the Baltic Sea and Holstein Switzerland. This wider area includes around 50 kilometres of Baltic coastline and around 80 lakes. Lake Großer Plöner See covers 29 km², and Lake Selenter See 22 km². The Baltic coast of the Plön district offers a different perspective on the water: bathing spots stretch from Mönkeberg to Sehlendorfer Strand, and sailing, surfing and boat trips are also available there.
