Schönberg / Holstein brings together two distinct sides for planning a trip: the cultural history of the Probstei is at its heart, while a wide range of water sports is also available locally. For families who like to spend their days discovering new things and being active, this offers a variety of themes to shape your trip around.

Everyday Culture in the Probstei

The Probstei Museum Schönberg is housed in a restored farm complex in the centre of Schönberg. It presents rural everyday culture and living conditions in the 19th and early 20th centuries, as well as the cultural history of the Probstei. You can explore historic homes and ways of life together with the region’s cultural context.

Educational activities are available for children, young people and school classes. The seasonal programme includes markets, demonstrations, bread baking, theatre, readings, music and guided tours. Visitors can also take part in a historic cycle tour or a historic walk through Schönberg. Programme details are seasonal and may change; check dates and activities before your visit.

Water Sports in Schönberg

The range extends from kitesurfing and sailing to stand-up paddleboarding, banana boat rides, pedal boating and rowing. Schönberg has three local water sports schools. Alongside the cultural and historical activities, this gives you several different water-based activities to choose from when planning your trip. The participating schools and availability may change.

Plön as a Broader Travel Destination

The broader travel destination of Plön opens up a wider landscape perspective. Plön district lies between the Baltic Sea and Holstein Switzerland and has around 50 kilometres of Baltic Sea coastline. The district includes around 80 lakes, including Lake Plön, covering 29 km², and Lake Selent, covering 22 km². The coast and lakes offer two distinct landscape themes for a stay in Plön district.

Swimming is possible along the Baltic Sea coast of Plön district, from Mönkeberg to Sehlendorfer Strand. The coast also offers opportunities for sailing, surfing, diving, boat trips, offshore sailing trips, cutter trips and surf fishing. Operators and schedules may change.

The bathing area on Prinzeninsel is also part of the broader travel destination of Plön: it has a gently sloping sandy beach about 100 metres wide. The bathing area can only be reached on foot or by bicycle. For planning purposes, this is a specific difference from the coastal activities, for which no such access requirements are stated.

Large areas of the district are part of the Holstein Switzerland Nature Park. The nature park covers 75,000 hectares and offers space for nature experiences and the chance to see rare animals. The district’s gently rolling landscape also provides suitable conditions for cycling and hiking tours. The signposted cycling network in Plön district covers 850 kilometres; there are also developed Nordic walking routes. Routes may change.
