Ascheffel is nestled in the landscape of HĂĽttener Berge Nature Park. The hilly surroundings, hedgerows and Aschberg define the area, while traces of the past offer a glimpse into its cultural history. During a stay, you can explore nature, outdoor activities and history as distinct themes.

Hilly landscape around Aschberg

Aschberg rises to 98 metres and offers sweeping views across the hilly surroundings. A 20-metre observation tower is one of the attractions on Aschberg. Around 130 kilometres of hedgerows shape the local landscape. The panoramic views from the ridge and the hedgerow-lined surroundings offer two distinct landscape experiences.

Hedgerows and learning activities

The Aschberg Green Classroom was established on Aschberg in 2021. It is freely accessible and serves as a starting point for trips to nearby hedgerows; access conditions may change. A cube puzzle matches leaves, fruit, flowers and shrub names, introducing visitors to the shrub species found in hedgerows. With the tree puzzle, students can compare bark, heartwood and weight, and examine annual rings. The two puzzles focus on different characteristics of woody plants: one on shrubs and their leaves, fruit and flowers, the other on wood and tree rings.

Traces of history

There was a glassworks in Ascheffel around 1550; in 1633, Duke Frederick III had a paper mill built there. The Bismarck statue on Aschberg also has its own story: made of copper sheet, it was unveiled in September 1930 after being moved from Knivsberg near Aabenraa to Aschberg. It was created by Schleswig-Holstein sculptor Adolf BrĂĽtt. Aschberg is therefore home to both a striking landscape destination and a historic monument.
