In Haby, village history and rural life are closely intertwined: memorial oaks commemorate important events, the partly preserved Old Church Path leads into the past, and a walk by Lake Wittensee offers a different way to experience the landscape. When planning your visit, you can choose between a short stroll through the village and a tour lasting around two hours.

Walking and cycling around Haby

The Groß Wittensee–Schlaukweg–Haby walk is about 8 kilometres long and takes around two hours. It initially follows Lake Wittensee and passes a bathing area. Other routes into Haby lead through the meadows of the Habyer Au or through Haby’s recreational forest, where the Brobach meanders naturally. Check local trail conditions before setting out.

Haby is also a possible starting point for a bike ride: the Wittensee–Goosefeld–Holtsee–Kiel Canal circular route lists the village as one of its starting points. Across the wider Rendsburg-Eckernförde destination, the district has five long-distance cycle routes, five e-bike tours and twelve themed routes. The district’s signposted cycle network covers 1,000 kilometres. This regional selection offers a broader planning scope than the routes around Haby itself.

Memorial oaks and the Old Church Path

The memorial trees can be discovered on a short stroll through the village. At the junction of Eckernförder Straße and Wiehenredder stands the preserved ensemble of the Peace Oak. The associated stone bears the inscription “Peace! 1870–71”. The village square is also home to a preserved ensemble consisting of an original double oak and a memorial stone. A Unity Oak also stands on the large village square; its memorial stone commemorates German reunification on 3 October 1990.

Another trail leads back to the village’s earlier history. The partly preserved Old Church Path near Haby connected Haby with Sehestedt for church services and other cultural events. Three stepping stones still mark the northern section of the historic path; check their condition before visiting. Haby was first mentioned in 1283 under the historical spelling “Hagebe”. Burial chambers and megalithic tombs in the surrounding area point to human activity dating back to prehistoric times.

Horticulture, crafts and country cooking

Blumen Colmorgen is a horticultural business now in its fifth generation. Flowers and plants grow in its greenhouses; at the on-site shop, you can buy plants and garden supplies and find floristry services. This adds another facet of rural life to your travel plans: alongside walking routes and places of remembrance, there is an established horticultural business with its own shop.

The Landgasthof Haby-Krog in Haby, in the HĂĽttener Berge Nature Park, serves fresh country-style cuisine, combining regional dishes with modern Mediterranean fare. Dishes are made with herbs from its own herb garden, and the inn also offers handmade chocolates. According to the inn, it sources most of its vegetables and salad from organic farms in the region. Menus, sourcing and product offerings may change; check what is currently available before your visit.

At UnsHabyLand, the focus is on keeping and preserving old livestock breeds, including sheep and other farm animals. The farm shop sells products from the animals. The range also includes sheep’s wool, hand-spun yarn and a spinning circle. If you are looking for a particular product or the spinning circle, check availability in advance.

Choose the right focus for your stay

The walk of about 8 kilometres and the regional cycle routes represent different scales of trip planning. You can plan your outings around whether you would rather focus on a specific walk or the regional cycle routes.
