Hamweddel has a rural character on the edge of Aukrug Nature Park, as well as a distinctive cultural highlight at Masurenhof Kollmoor: it is home to a gallery with more than 300 paintings. Outdoors, the Luhnau, the village pond and the surrounding woods provide a setting for walks and relaxing time in nature. The village therefore offers two different points of interest side by side: art spanning a wide range of subjects and the varied small-scale landscape of the village.

Paintings and East Prussian heritage at Masurenhof

The gallery exhibits works by the artist and portrait painter Günter Lingner. Subjects include Prussian history, landscapes, cityscapes, animals, nudes and portraits. This range spans historical themes, views and portraiture, giving the collection a distinctive focus within the village. The name Masurenhof also has a personal historical connection: it reflects Lingner’s enduring attachment to his former home in East Prussia. If you would like to include the gallery in your plans, it is best to check visiting arrangements in advance.

Walks along the Luhnau, by the village pond and in the woods

The Luhnau runs through the village; the village pond and surrounding woods provide a setting for walks and spending time in nature. The Luhnau Bridge and the river itself also serve as local landmarks. Hamweddel can therefore also be experienced through its landscape: here, the focus is on paths by the water, the pond and the trees, rather than on a single major attraction. If you enjoy exploring on foot, you can make these local spots the focus of your time in the village, without needing to plan a longer hiking route.

The Kiel Canal is a few kilometres away. This adds another geographical point of reference to the village and woodland landscape, while the Luhnau flows directly through Hamweddel. The Luhnau Bridge is also a useful landmark for finding your way around the village. When planning, you can distinguish between walks in the immediate surroundings and views of the wider landscape, without needing to combine them into a set route.

Getting here and regional distances

Hamweddel’s central bus station is a hub for many bus routes and offers good transport connections. Check current routes and timetables separately when planning your specific journey. This keeps the general overview of connections separate from planning a particular trip.

On a broader scale, the Rendsburg-Eckernförde destination offers further perspectives for planning your trip. Rendsburg-Eckernförde district has 55 kilometres of Baltic Sea coastline and a 1,000-kilometre network of signposted cycle routes. The 180-kilometre Nature Park Hiking Trail passes through the district’s four nature parks. In addition, approximately 70 kilometres, or two-thirds, of the Kiel Canal run through Rendsburg-Eckernförde district. These figures give a sense of the region’s scale for cycling and hiking; they do not describe the routes within the village itself. This means you can distinguish Hamweddel’s walks and landscape from plans focused on cycling or longer hikes across the district.
