Strande is located on the Dänischer Wohld peninsula, directly on Kiel Outer Fjord. The town combines a distinct fjord setting with trails, natural features and an art history that reaches as far as the Kunsthalle Kiel. This means there are several possible priorities to consider when planning your trip: walking, cycling routes, nature watching and culture can be distinguished by specific places and routes. If you are looking for accommodation in Strande, you can first consider which of these aspects you want to shape your stay and which themes you would like to add.

Walking and Cycling Routes

The approximately six-kilometre promenade runs from Schilksee to Bülk Lighthouse. In addition, five colour-coded hiking routes, ranging from 3.5 to 11 kilometres, run around Strande. The promenade offers a continuous route between two named points; the hiking routes offer several distances to choose from. When planning a walk, you can weigh up the different types of route and distances. For cycling, there is also the Baltic Sea Cycle Route and themed routes through Dänischer Wohld. The European long-distance hiking trail E1 also runs along the shore in the wider area around Strande. Hiking and cycling therefore offer different emphases and approaches to exploring the area.

Natural Environment, Birds and Views

Fuhlensee has been a protected nature reserve since 1993. Verlobungsweg is a woodland trail at the northern end of the lake, adding a specific forest route to the natural setting. The FFH area extends eastwards as far as Strande. Its waters are internationally important resting areas for waterbirds and coastal birds, and have European bird protection status. The importance of these waters is thus closely connected to their function as resting areas.

The viewing platform at Bülk Lighthouse offers a different perspective: it is 22 metres high and affords views of the Baltic Sea, the steep coast and Dänischer Wohld. The viewpoint offers a different focus from the woodland trail and bird resting area: here, the coast and hinterland are in view, while Fuhlensee and the FFH area foreground the natural environment and its importance for birds.

Art and the History of Winegrowing

Art history also has a specific connection to Strande. Max Pechstein created preliminary sketches for his painting “Am Strand” here. The work is part of the permanent exhibition of Expressionist artists at Kunsthalle Kiel. This makes it possible to connect the town’s artistic heritage with a named artist and painting, as well as with an exhibition venue.

Vines were planted at Gut Eckhof in 2018, followed by the first grape harvest in 2020. These dates add another point of interest alongside the nature and art themes. If you are travelling with several people, these different interests can help you agree on shared priorities for your stay in advance.
