Klein Wittensee lies right on the shores of Lake Wittensee. The lake, paths and regional products give the village several different sides: you can focus on the views across the water, include a route through the village or take an interest in what a farm shop bistro has to offer. The first thing to consider when choosing accommodation is which of these will shape your trip.

Lake Wittensee and Sande

Lake Wittensee is up to 20 metres deep and was formed by a glacier tongue around 20,000 years ago. Its origins therefore go far back in time; today, Klein Wittensee’s direct location on the shore is a defining part of the village’s character. Sande also brings the lake and a place to stay together: there is a barbecue area with toilets there.

There is also a bathing area on the west shore near Sande, which serves as a surfing access point when the wind is from the west. Check the water and access conditions before using it. This makes it clear when planning that stopping by the shore is different from taking part in a water sport that depends on the wind.

Paths and activities

The skating route passes through Klein Wittensee on footpaths and cycle paths alongside the B 203. This means that a designated section of the route runs through the village. Outdoor fitness equipment has also been installed by Lake Wittensee in the area around Klein Wittensee, Groß Wittensee and Bünsdorf. Check the equipment’s current condition before using it.

Another cultural highlight is in Groß Wittensee: the Dutch-style windmill dates from 1874 and regularly offers guided tours for visitors. Check the tour dates before your visit. This lets you plan a possible visit as a separate activity, rather than confusing it with the paths by the lake.

Regional products in Klein Wittensee

The Glücksstück farm shop bistro in Klein Wittensee sells meat from free-range pigs raised on straw, as well as other locally produced foods. There is a vending machine next to the bistro with chilled barbecue meat and sausages. The range and location may change, so check before travelling which products are available and where the vending machine is currently located. The farm shop bistro and the vending machine are two different places to find regional products.

Nature park and longer tours

Klein Wittensee is one of 21 municipalities in Hüttener Berge Nature Park. The park has 20 signposted circular walking trails and six cycling routes. These figures represent different ways to explore the landscape on foot or by bike. There is also a marked 15-kilometre mountain bike route in Brekendorf Forest. When planning, you can choose between a circular walk, a signposted cycling route and a specific mountain bike trail.

Rendsburg-Eckernförde as a wider region

The wider Rendsburg-Eckernförde travel region offers landscapes beyond Lake Wittensee. The district has 55 kilometres of Baltic Sea coastline and a 1,000-kilometre signposted cycle route network. These figures describe the wider region, not additional activities in Klein Wittensee itself.

The 98-metre-high Aschberg is another landmark in this wider region: in good weather, the panoramic view extends to the Kiel Canal, Eckernförde Bay and the state capital, Kiel.
