Kosel combines a hilly landscape shaped by ice with lakes, the Schlei and a remarkable local history. Four inland lakes, archaeological traces and historic views give the area its distinctive character. There are also trails through Kosel and its surroundings, as well as cultural and dining options.

Hilly landscape, lakes and the Schlei

Kosel lies in a hilly landscape strongly shaped by glacial processes. The four inland lakes cover a combined area of more than 50 hectares. In addition, the Schlei has around 20 kilometres of shoreline. The inland waters and the Schlei shape the area’s waterscape in different ways. When choosing your accommodation, you can consider whether lakes and shorelines, or trails and local history, will play a greater role in your trip.

Discover local history along the trails

A historic walking and cycling route runs through Kosel and its surroundings. A central viewpoint in the village offers a view of the Pastorenwitwenhaus, the rectory, the old forge, Koseler Hof and the former Kroymannschule. Ten information boards along the cycling and walking trails explore the municipality’s history. While the viewpoint brings several buildings together in one vista, the boards spread information about the area along the trails.

Kosel’s history also reaches further back: excavated settlements in western and eastern Kosel provide evidence of Viking Age habitation. The historical themes range from archaeological traces of settlements to the village’s buildings and views.

Cycling routes, a rest stop and a ferry crossing

The Netzausleger in Kosel or Missunde is located at the narrowest point of the Schlei. It is considered a rest stop on a cycling tour that includes crossing the Schlei. The Missunde ferry provides another connection across the water: it runs between Missunde in Kosel and Brodersby, linking the Angeln and Schwansen areas. Check the timetable before travelling. Some of the walking and cycling trails are also suitable for Nordic walking, allowing you to include different types of routes in your travel plans.

When planning your trip, you can distinguish between Kosel’s mix of lakes, the Schlei and local history and the themes found across the district.
