The municipality of Borgwedel lies on the southern shore of the Schlei in a terminal moraine landscape and extends into the Großen Breite area. The Old Brickworks adds a historical dimension: traces of its former operations remain visible.

Traces of the brickworks and arrival by water

At the Old Brickworks in Borgwedel, clay pits, foundations of former drying sheds, old bricks and misfired bricks are visible. These traces illustrate different stages of brickworks operations: the pits point to the extraction of raw materials, while the foundations mark the drying sheds; the bricks and misfired bricks show the results of firing. An interpretive trail explains the industrial and ecological history of the site.

Borgwedel and Stexwig are considered harbours for holidaymakers arriving by water. If you are planning to arrive this way, check current availability before setting off. When planning your trip, it is worth distinguishing between two things: are you primarily interested in the historical and ecological traces at the brickworks, or do you want to make arriving by water part of your stay?

More themes in the wider Schleswig-Flensburg destination

The wider Schleswig-Flensburg destination also offers a range of historical highlights. Haithabu and the Danevirke have been UNESCO World Heritage Sites since June 2018; more than 25 kilometres of the rampart of the Danevirke still remain. The historical memorial site and Idstedt Museum offer another perspective on German-Danish history. They provide information about the uprising of 1848 and the Battle of Idstedt. This allows you to explore World Heritage and the remembrance of 19th-century events as distinct cultural themes.

Schlei Nature Park is known for its varied landscape of gentle hills, forests, hedgerow landscapes, rapeseed and grain fields, sandy beaches and bathing coves. The Schlei’s brackish-water areas provide habitats for numerous endangered bird species. Guided nature tours, the Viking-Frisian Way, the Ox Road and 15 signposted themed cycle routes offer further ways to explore the landscape. More than 130 bird species can be observed on Holnis, including around 65 breeding species.

At Geltinger Birk, well-maintained paths and guided walks combine exercise with insights into the flora and fauna. Covering a total area of 773 hectares, it is the largest nature reserve in the Schleswig-Flensburg district. Tolk-Schau offers a very different kind of leisure activity: the family amusement park features rides, playgrounds, park trains, fairytale huts and more than 100 life-size dinosaurs.
