Harrislee combines a green border landscape with coastal paths, culture and the beach at Wassersleben. In the Niehuuser Tunneltal valley, marshes, meadows and wet woodlands shape the landscape; in the Schäferhaus foundation land, open areas alternate with scrub and woodland. There are also traces of regional industrial history, theatre and Nordic products in the border shops. Harrislee therefore offers several distinct highlights to help you plan your trip—from nature and outdoor activities to culture and days by the water.

Nature between the Tunneltal valley and grazing landscapes

The Niehuuser Tunneltal valley is a varied landscape of marshes, meadows and wet woodlands. The Krusau is a German-Danish border river here and a habitat for rare animal and plant species. Those interested in the nature of the border region will find a different landscape here than in the Schäferhaus foundation land.

Schäferhaus is a semi-open grazing landscape: dry grassland and nutrient-poor grassland alternate with dense scrub and woodland. A circular hiking and cycling route passes historical traces. These include Hörnerplatz, a wooden silhouette of a forest elephant and reconstructed burial mounds. The route combines outdoor activity with insights into the area's history.

Border trails and historical traces

Several long-distance routes cross Harrislee: the Ochsenweg, the Gendarmenpfad, the Grenzroute and the Fördesteig. The Grenzroute crosses the German-Danish border thirteen times; there are forty information points with overview maps along the route, as well as many sights. Hiking and cycling tours around Harrislee also run along the coast and through the green border region, with views of the Danish coast.

The routes offer different highlights. In Schäferhaus, the focus is on a circular route and historical traces in the area; the Grenzroute makes repeatedly crossing the border a defining feature. At the Ochsenweg in Niehuus, you can see the remains of a small castle complex. These are different ways to discover Harrislee on foot or by bike—from taking in individual historical traces to exploring the German-Danish border as a theme.

Museum, theatre and regional products

The KupfermĂĽhle Industrial Museum presents regional industrial history in historic halls. You can also visit a historic workers' settlement. The visit therefore combines the history of industry with a look at the settlement connected to it.

The BĂĽrgerhaus in Harrislee is the home stage of the Broschmann und Finke Theater Company. Its programme includes musicals, children's theatre and the ensemble's own show. Harrislee's border shops offer another perspective on this border town, selling Nordic products such as liquorice, fish specialities and Danish classics. The Freizeitlichtung recreation area has a covered barbecue shelter, covered seating and exercise equipment designed to blend into the woodland.

Beach days in Wassersleben

Wassersleben is considered Germany's westernmost Baltic Sea beach. The beach has public toilets and a beach shower. The area offers more space for pedestrians and cyclists, places to linger and bicycle racks. Wassersleben can be reached by bike and by bus routes 1 and 7. Check the bus routes before you travel.

When looking for accommodation, you can use your preferred focus as a guide: Wassersleben is ideal for beach days, Schäferhaus for a walk through a varied grazing landscape, and Kupfermühle for regional industrial history. This lets you choose accommodation based on what you most want to experience in Harrislee, without trying to fit every theme into a single itinerary.

Schleswig-Flensburg in the wider region

In the wider travel destination of Schleswig-Flensburg, Haithabu and the Danewerk have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since June 2018. The area also offers its own nature experiences: more than 130 bird species can be observed on Holnis, including around 65 breeding species.
