Maasholm between the harbour, Schlei and nature
Accommodation in Maasholm
Discover Maasholm at the harbour, on the Schlei and on foot, exploring the village’s history and nature. A walk through the village can take in the harbour, sheltered moorings for boats on the Schlei, St Peter’s Church, the listed 1916 lifeboat station and thatched fishermen’s cottages. A stroll brings you face to face with different sides of the village, from its fishing history to sea rescue.
Village history and little discoveries
The tourist information office houses a small fishing museum about the history of fishing in Maasholm. It also has regional brochures and information pillars about Maasholm and its surroundings. For another activity to enjoy together, you can borrow boules from the tourist information office; the boules court is next to the motorhome stopover.
The Maasholm Nature Experience Centre has a playground themed around wind, water and the coast. It also offers nature experience programmes for tourists, school classes, groups and children’s birthday parties. Programme availability may vary seasonally. Alongside a walk around the village, you can therefore choose activities focused on experiencing nature.
Sailing, surfing and excursion boats
Sailing lessons in small groups are offered from Maasholm’s marina on the Schlei. When the wind is right, you can sail past the lighthouse and out to sea. You can learn windsurfing and wing foiling on the Wormshöfter Noor; a surf school is located right on the shore. As availability may vary by provider, check what is currently on offer in advance.
Excursion boats on the Schlei also depart from a named location in the village: the Schumacher Bridge in Maasholm is one of their departure points. As departure arrangements may change, it is best to check the timetable when planning your trip. This lets you compare your own activities on the water with a boat trip as different ways to spend a day by and on the water.
Walking and cycling routes
A two-kilometre nature trail connects the Exhöft hiking car park with the Maasholm Nature Experience Centre. Another route starts at the harbour: this walk of just under three kilometres follows the Schlei dike via Hegeberg to the Nature Experience Centre or continues all the way to the Baltic Sea. The routes differ in their starting points and courses: one begins at the hiking car park, the other at the harbour.
If you would like to include a longer hike in your plans, consider the Nature Park Hiking Trail. It starts in Maasholm in Schlei Nature Park and passes through four nature parks in Schleswig-Holstein. The trail is 180 kilometres long and marked in both directions with yellow arrows; you can also walk shorter sections or circular routes. This gives you a choice between a local trail to the Nature Experience Centre and a long-distance hiking trail with different route options.
There is also a cycling tour that starts and ends in Maasholm: the “Via Altona to Belgrade” tour is about 35 kilometres long. Its route details depend on local trail conditions. For another place to visit, Maasholm’s Baltic Sea beach is about 10 minutes away by car or around 15 minutes by bicycle. Both travel times are approximate.
Nearby and in the Schleswig-Flensburg destination
Nearby, Geltinger Birk features a variety of coastal landscapes, including beaches, lagoons, salt marshes, coastal forests, cliffs and bogs. During bird migration, you can watch birds from Mühle Charlotte, the Beveroe bridge and along the Krötenweg near Falshöft.
The wider Schleswig-Flensburg destination also includes Haithabu and the Danevirke; both have been UNESCO World Heritage Sites since June 2018. Gentle hills, forests, hedgerow landscapes, rapeseed and grain fields, sandy beaches and swimming coves shape the scenery in Schlei Nature Park. The Schlei’s brackish-water areas provide a habitat for numerous endangered bird species. These regional highlights add to the picture of Maasholm without equating the village’s special offerings with those of the wider destination.
